go for a diesel car or 4x4   forget the lpg idea as you actually lose mpg  as i was looking into having lpg fitted to a frontera and was put off  by 13% less mpg(approx)

so i would go for a large diesel estate   (not laguna 2.2 d est)   tdis are better

I used to tow with a Jeep 2.5 diesel, it towed ok but I was forever changing gear. The engine in these vehicles is a VM diesel origonaly made for generators I believe, was used in diesel rovers at one time. Avoid it like the plague unless you know differently!

LPG is fine providing you get a good conversion, but you will not be able to use Eurotunnel and you will also find that when you come to trade it in it will not be worth as much as you thought!

We tow with our Daisy, she is a Discovery TDi K reg, and she tows Dolly (our ABI Gobestar) beautifully, we always feel safe and secure on the road. The MPG drops a bit when towing but not vastly. We really appreciated Daisy last time we were out as the grass we were pitched on was very wet and muddy but she had no problems pulling Dolly off and then getting off the site was very steep and tight - down into low box and let her just take it slowly.

All round she is a great vehicle whether communting to work, towing Dolly or trundling down a green lane.

Good luck.

Hi Oatcake -

Can't comment on Discos but, like Jeepster, I had a 2.5 Jeep Cherokee with the VM engine - nice inside but rough as hell running due to that engine.  The 4.0 Litre will return about 17mpg - and that is without a 'van behind!!

I'm off 4x4's at present 'cos I've had a bad run of problems with a couple - have you considered a Volvo V70 D5, or (personal bias here) a C5 2.2HDi - good fuel consumption, economical to run and really comfy?

Jon

Hi, I had a W-Reg Series 2 Disco 2.5TD5 and it was a great towcar, but I sold it due to its unreliabilty. I was fortunate that the dealer honoured the warranty but looking at spares costs even from specialists they are not cheap. The mpg was arond 27 mpg on a mix of A road and town driving. I now have aKia sorento which is sheer magic.
