Hi all.
I'm after your thoughts on towing with a 1.4 Petrol Peugeot 308 VTI.
Im new to towing and due to budget restraints / finance issues we are unable to upgrade the car. Because of this we have decided to cut our dreams of a 4 berth caravan down to a folding camper so the family still gets away but sleeps off the ground.
Any advice or recommendations re towing with this car (other than getting something else?).
What we have looked at so far seem to be around the min 650/675 kg - max laden 900 kg if that makes sense.
Sorry if this is confusing but I'm a little baffled by the whole thing.
Thanks in advance.

Do you know the towing limits of the car.

Also look at a dandy high side destiny as a folding camper. Max weight 750kg but loads of room and very well built.

Thanks Navver,
All the info I can find seems to state that max towing braked would be 1400kg (675 unbraked).
Like I say i'm still a newbie at all this but I'm presuming a folding camper would be braked?

If it weighs more than 750kg it must be braked by law. 1400kg is an impressive limit.

You need.

Tow ball or nose weight must be less than car will allow although it can be adjusted a little by careful loading.

MTPLM of caravan must be less than braked limit of car (1400kg) and should ideally be no more than 85% the kerb weight of the car.

Fully loaded weight of car and caravan must be less than Gross Train Weight of car.

Then there are licence issues but you should be under that OK.

It will tow your folding camper reasonably well. If its the car you have then it will have to do.

Thanks for this Navver / Opensauce.
Does the Tow Ball / Nose weight vary depending on towbar fitted (removeable, swan neck etc) or is it car specific?
85% of Kerbweight works out 1165KG give or take 2-3KG so I should be fine although I am trying to stay as light as possible until I get more accustomed to towing.

You max towbar weight should be indicated in your car handbook. Probably 70kg. It doesn't matter what towbar is fitted, weight limit remains the same. Thats max weight so anything up to that. If your camper is only 800kg then 50-60kg is ok.
