Not a prayer of buying an automatic ASX for £12k unless it has a very very high mileage. A 5 year old manual ASX 4WD goes for £12k (was £21k new), and the auto version didn't come out until a couple of years ago, its 4wd.

I think the high 2nd hand value says it all!

Might consider a manual ASX providing the clutch and gearbox are light in action.

Clutch is certainly light, gearbox is usually fine, but a few complain of it being notchy between 1st and 2nd. Depends on how fast you like to change gear. Normal light touch and it is fine, but you'd be able to road test this.

Yes cabin is a bit old fashioned, but it lasts really well, tends to stay scratch free, and the leather seats (in the ASX4 wear well).

The best model is the 1.8 MIVEC, which was 148bhp. They later changed it to a 1.8 110bhp which lacks power for towing.

The 1.8 Mivec engine will cruise all day in 6th gear at anything over 50mph with 1000-1200kg caravan on the back and return a very respectable mpg.

Honda CRV over all of them every time.

We achieved 37mpg (tank to tank) towing our caravan from the channel to Italy.

Depreciation: just 50% after 5 years and 40,000 miles

Can a CRV get anywhere near that?

You pays your money and takes your chance I have just taken delivery of the SsangYong Korando. Decision based on the owner reviews not the motoring journalists they do talk some drivel. Solo it great 40mpg round town, yet to tow but based on reviews, should be spot on. If your nor swayed by a badge might be worth a look

A left field choice would be a Dacia Duster Ambience Prime 110 DCi (brand new) for £12.5K,(non metallic and no spare (£150 extra) will tow up to 1500 kgs. I have no experience of this brand but it is basically a renualt. It is not available with an auto box.
You will have the benefit of a 3 year/60000 miles warranty,
Alternatively 2010 CR V diesel Autos with around 60K are available for your budget of £12K. I have a CRV auto 2.2 diesel with 56K on the clock and it has been ultra reliable
