Hello,
We have a 2007 Dodge Caliber 2.0L SXT Sport, 138bhp. Kerbside weight is 1560Kg but the manufacturer's braked trailer towing weight is only 1200kg.
We tow a Sprite Alpine 4 with is and it's a doddle. The 85% rule says we could tow 1326kg so how come Dodge only say we can tow 1200kg ?

the 85% is not a rule it's a guide line.your tow limit is to do with what the gearbox/clutch/engine can safely tow.

Your 1200kg limit is there for a reason , to exceed it is illegal and could have insurance implications if you choose to tow above the max weight stated for your car .
If you need to tow heavier your only option is to change to a more suitable towcar

Yes, but it`s fitted in a Passat bodyshell with Passat running gear.
There are many reasons why the limit for your car may be so low - gearing, brakes, body construction, cooling, suspension etc.
If it`s type approved at 1200kgs, then thats that, you are stuck with it and can`t exceed it.

Irrelevant.
Your car is not a Passat.
It is not just the engine that affects the towing limits, but things like suspension, braking, gearbox, even body construction.
