We have a Golf 2.0 TDI which is a perfect match for our 1180 van and has towed like a peach since we first started caravanning in September 2014.
In the next year we are thinking of changing the car. I have heard the newer Golfs are lighter.
We like cars with a bit of omph so when not towing they drive well.(fun I mean)
I can spend ages entering different cars into a towing calculator but before I do what do you experts out there think? Recommendations.

Hi' Lyn,
Be careful before moving on to a new Golf as you might be surprised at the difference in weight ratio.
We had the mark one Ford C-max as my wife is slightly disabled and needs an upright seeting position. This car was plated to to 1500kg braked.
We now have a mark two model which is virtually the same to look at and in performance, but, it is only plated to pull a caravan of 1080kg.?? Quite a difference eh?
Les.

Be careful with outfit matching sites. The weights and towing weights in their database can be hopelessly inaccurate. You need to enter actual weights.
That's what is worrying me Les4 paintings. Thanks Navver. Looking for any car suggestions that forum members may come up with.

Check out the Mitsubishi ASX 1.8 diesel. It will tow your van easily, my van is 1280 kgs and I 've done about 5000 miles with it on the back. When not towing it's got great acceleration and will do high 40's to the gallon - that's actual not the clock. Also they are a little cheaper than some similar cars.
Look at the Octavia with 3 diesel engine options in 2wd and 4 wd, built on the golf platform but heavier.
Basically the same car but with sheds more room
You could also look at the Sean Leon Xperience. For a 4WD it's quite light (around 1500kg unladen) and, being an estate, it has a big load-space. I'm a bit biased because I have one, albeit 2WD.
