Hello All,

I require the time honoured assistance with the pro's and con's of twin over single axle and help with correct vehicle choice and to clear up the confusion why some lighter vehicles can carry more please?

At present we quite like the following:-

1) BAILEY SENATOR LOUISIANA Series 5 MRO=1445kg & MTPLM=1695kg
2) Elddis Crusader Aurora 2005 MRO=1363kg & MTPLM=1560kg
3) Compass Rallye 550 2009 MRO=1357kg & MTPLM=1630kg
4) Buccaneer Caravel # 2009 Model MRO=1618kg & MTPLM=1900kg


Whilst looking at vehicle choices for the larger vehicles, it would seem that I would need a VW Touareg 3L Turbo Diesel. When really I would prefer something smaller and more economical. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hi. Can't comment on the suitability of towing vehicles save to say that you will need a big one!
As for the difference between single and twin axles there is no comparison between the two. The twin will be far more stable when on tow and are also much easier to reverse.
Only down side that I have found is that they are quite impossible to manoeuvre by hand so if you have Al-Ko wheel locks you will need a motor mover just to fit them.

If you need manouvre one then a car with a heavy duty clutch is preferred. ie a 4x4.

The recommended weight is 85% of the cars unladen kerbweight. Looking at a large van may have you thinking "i want it" but then you need a towcar to match.

You need the compromise on how big a car then match the caravan to it.

A twin axle will impart more shocks and buffeting to the towing vehicle, but as said above it is generally more stable to tow.

The 85% rule is probably more applicable to smaller cars, we tow at a maximum 3500kg with our Discovery V8, but something like a Freelander 2 is probably more in your line, although still a fairly big vehicle.

We go into Europe with our display engine and trailer, and have no problems at that weight.
