I'm fitting a reversing camera to my van (tug) and having thoughts on fitting one in the rear window of the caravan.
Question is, is it legal to have it on constantly, ie. like a rear view mirror or is it a traffic offence in the eyes of the law as it's a video image your watching.
I fitted a reverse camera to a friends van as he had no rear view interior mirror, he said its great. I would like to fit one to my caravan but not sure about the canbus car wiring system, not sure if caravan has reverse lights fitted, will look when we use the caravan next Monday :-)

My plan is to take the power off the caravan battery.
A friend of mine wired his to the caravan fridge feed, when the engine was running his reversing camera was on permanently, he had the monitor attached to his windscreen. He had nothing wired into the car, I think the system was all connected via Bluetooth (but I may be wrong)

i fitted a wireless camera and wired the power supply across the fridge feed.
first problem was that on my current car the fridge feed was intermittent because the alternator has a clutch so when the battery id charges the alternator disengages. the voltage drops and the split charge relay drops out so the camera was switching on and off. i then reduced the threshold of the split charge relay towards 12v but this means the fridge could drain my car battery if left parked.
the camera then stayed on for longer periods but the signal would be lost at times, this also drove me mad.the sender for the camer was mounted in the front window of the caravan and the receiver in the front of the car, line of site and only about 4M away.
one time i was sat at traffic lights and picked up the camera of a car behind me on the monitor.
anyway i took the camera off my last caravan and plan to fit it to my new one but i have fitted an accessory plug to it and will plug it in to my cars accessory socket in the boot. with a cable between the car and caravan.

I've got the bits just need to get the time to go down to the storage yard and fit it.
I have the camera in the van (tug) spliced in to the tow bar electrics as the fitter installed a relay and ran a wire from the van battery told me it was necessary to make it compatible with the can bus system.
Camera works a treat in the van so just need to splice into the side lights and run the video cable through the front window of the caravan, hopefully should be a doddle to set up when I hitch up.
