I am becoming increasingly aware that my 16 year old Volvo V70 isn't going to last forever. It has done over 153,000 miles, so I am starting to consider options. I have a very limited budget but three vehicles I am considering are Volvo XC60, Volvo XC90, and Skoda Yeti. All 3 are probably out of my price range as yet, but I need to look to the future. All 3 are easily capable of towing my caravan, and I have a D+E licence as well as B+E (test passed 1967). Any thoughts?
Auto trader for a yeti, look for the 2ltr tdi or cr unit, use the Volvo as a trade in DM Keith give good trade ins, I got 3000 for my superb with 274 000 miles
Skoda also make a 4x4 in the Octavia, Scout, and superb all will tow your van even the normal 2wd types will
I like the look of the Yeti, Skoda Bob. I need an estate (type) car, and any of the three I mentioned would do. I don't necessarily need 4WD, and I would prefer a diesel, a high driving position, and an auto gearbox. Is the Yeti a conventional auto with a torque converter, which I would prefer?

Yeti auto used the DSG gearbox. I'd go for the xc90 personally, so much car for not much money
Skoda Scout higher than the Octavia, both estates and you can raise the seat if required, and you can get it with DSG same with the Superb estate, all boot space is like a tardice
personally I wouldn't buy anything used with a dsg gearbox. Great when they work, ridiculously expensive when they go wrong and I am speaking from experience.
I must admit I am wary of DSG gearboxes. I know very little about them. Am I right in saying that they have an automatically activated clutch, rather than a torque converter? I like having a torque converter, especially one that "locks up" like most modern ones do. Even my 16 year old Volvo's does it.
I'm with Checkley: DSG gearboxes are hugely complicated compared to proven torque converter technology. They are there to bring down emissions, expensive to repair (bearing in mind the stress of towing) and Honest John warns against VAG DSGs on reliability grounds.
If you like Volvos (and I certainly do), stick with them. I checked out the XC60 last time I changed and, while a good car, it isn't nearly as roomy as the size suggests and the luggage area is very high indeed.
I've had two V70s in the past with the 2.4 autos and loved them both. Nothing beats the comfort of Volvo seats, including my present Mercedes E Class Estate.
