Hi
Do I have to unhitch my bull dog ante snake bar before reversing the caravan. Usually end up with clutch burning and wondered if this was what's wrong or just my incompetence lol
It isn't the reason for your burning clutch however it is best to unhitch the leaf and pull it to the side while you reverse. Unless it is of course a straight back reverse.
An anti-snake bar is exactly that which is only required when travelling forward therefore it is not required travelling at slow speeds or in reverse. The reverse gear ratio on a vehicle is about the same as the forward second gear so more clutch slip happens when reversing anyway so the anti-snake bar just adds more resistance causing unnecessary clutch burning.
As mentioned in an above post, if you are reversing straight back it won't make any difference as there is no resistance but reverse turning is restricting the hitch from pivoting freely so the best advice is to disconnect the Bulldog stabiliser spring from the caravan.
I have a new to me van, with a blade stabliser. this post is very helpful as my first trip was all great, nice straight reverse on to my pitch .
However my second trip last week I had astruggle to put the van on to a right angle pitch (clutch got smelly!)
I now realise that detaching the stabiliser would have been the correct course of action
