I'm just putting this on here for future reference for anyone like me who searches these forums for specific cars when considering what to buy. Apparently Mazda 6 have the same engine so this would apply to them too.
We bought our Mazda CX-7 last summer to replace our old thirsty auto sorento. The Mazda CX-7 has won tow car awards and had favourable reviews. We'd previously had a Mazda 6 estate which we loved but was too light when we bought our caravan. The cx7 is a great solo car, mpg averages around 40, 28 when towing. It's a sporty drive which means it's v good at overtaking tractors (which we have to do a lot around here) but has a firmer ride than the sorento, power wasn't an issue with our 1500kg van on the back.
However, there is something you should be aware of.....
If you buy one then ask whoever services it for you to clean the filter at the bottom of the oil pump (not the same a regular "oil and filter change"). Our 6.5yr old car has done 48k miles but has spent the last 2 mths in the garage. A design fault in the engine has caused a build-up of "stuff" which has blocked the oil pump so although the "oil and the filter" had been changed the oil wasn't getting to the engine and engines don't like that! When it happened I googled it and many other people have written almost identical scenarios.
I'm not saying don't buy this car, in almost every other way it's a fantastic car, specifically a big heavy car suitable for short legged drivers but this extra maintenance could save you masses of money.
