Hi, we are going to Alnwick next month, towing our caravan. Our route will be M1, M18 and A1. Would like some info, please, on services from the junction of M18/A1, with suitable caravan parking, especially north of Yorkshire.
Why use the M18? just carry on up the M1 and it joins the A1 just North of Leeds
Service area at Barnsley (Woolley Edge) (M1) Ferrybridge and Leeming Bar (A1)

M18 is quicker, done that journey myself
M18 may sometimes be quicker by about 15 min. It can get very slow/congested with HGVs as it only 2 lanes not 3. I have done both ways many times on the way to/from Scotland. The M1 can be congested when getting up to the M62 junction but it depends on the time of day
I would not recommend Scotch Corner services. There is no dedicated caravan parking. We stopped there last year and parked in the coach area only to be blocked in by a coach who said we should not be there. He refused to move so we had to unhitch to get out.
We checked with the service station manager and were told that caravans just have to park in the normal car park, which is pretty much impossible if the station is busy.
