Hi everyone. After some advice, looking to upgrade from our tt next year to a caravan again. Previous caravan was a lightweight 1086kg fully laden but I'm looking at some heavier vans at the moment.
My car is a Toyota avensis 2.0 diesel 2005. I intend using this as a towcar for next year before buying something bigger the following year.
This car has a kerbweight of 1550kg and a towing limit of 1300kg.
Caravans I've been looking at all tend to have MRO around the 1150kg mark with the MTPLM somewhere between 1315kg & 1390kg.
These laden weights are all above my legal tow limit but sit around the 85% mark.
My question is if I don't load the caravan above 1300kg can I tow it or can I only tow a van plated under 1300kg?

Many thanks In advance.

IMO you have zero chance of towing a caravan in a usable state that is 90 kgs lighter than its MTPLM. With few exceptions our caravans have pitifully low payloads without trying to use the van where most of that allowance is out of bounds.

The only legal requirement is that the trailer weight does not exceed the car maximum tow weight & max train weight then it is legal. C&U regs go on actual weighbridge weight. Licence law goes on plated weight.

So what the op proposes is legal but they need to ensure minimum load is in caravan. If they put too much load in car then they risk exceeding gross train weight.

A roadside weight check usually involves an axle weight check so provided there is no more than 1300kg on caravan axle & axle weights of towcar are not exceeded then ok.

The towing weight for the Toyota Avensis seems rather low actually so I had a look to see what I could find out myself. If you look at the list below it looks like the 2.0 ltr. diesel has a max. towing limit of 1800 kgs. However, there are 3 versions which are the T22, T25 and T27 which may help if you could identify which of the 3 your Avensis is as I could most likely find more info on this.

Thanks for the replies from everyone.

Nellie72 - 1987 plus I drive 44t artics so no issues on licence.
Tango 55 - they are all the new shape Avensis, mine is a 2005 which is 1300kg.
Opensauce & bessie - Thank you. The legal side concerning the plating is what concerns me. If it's plated at 1313kg but I had it under 1300kg would it be legal would it not?
Getting the weights right is never easy and sometimes luck more than judgement. Sailing that close to the limit is asking for trouble, I know, just curious to understand the law. As is always the case if you don't know best to ask.

Yes, it would be legal provided it did not weigh more than 1300kg. Read my previous post carefully. It explains it.

Possibly why the max tow is 1300kg. Fully loaded with luggage and towing 1300kg maybe on the limit of a major component. eg. Clutch or gearbox may have a shorter life at the max train weight.

My cars 3750 limit is below the combined gross laden weight and max tow weight. So i can load the car upto 2200kg or load it less and tow upto 1800kg.

I cannot load it to 2200kg and tow 1800kg at the same time.
