Hello guys, me and the wife are thinking about taking the plunge and buying a caravan. But we need some advice.
1: tow car, I get a new company car ever 6 months but not always guarantee my first choice but I am 99% shore I will be able to get one of the following models:
Vw golf estate 2.0tdi 150ps manual
Vw Passat estate 2.0tdi 150ps manual
Seat Leon st estate 2.0tdi 150ps manual
Skoda yeti 2.0tdi 150ps manual
Skoda superb estate 2.0tdi 150ps manual
Skoda octavia estate 2.0tdi 150ps manual.
Tow bar wont be a issue as I can request for one to be fitted. Plus passed my driving test in 1991. For what I pay its more cost efficient for me to have a company car than to buy my own car.
2: the caravan
Price around £16000 ish from dealer preferd
Brand new or a older model 1-3 years.
Single axle
No fix bed as we have a 2 year old. ( only 3 of us )
4 berth.
I suppose it comes down to what weight each car can tow. Be greatful if someone could say which car Is the best of the bunch and the worst is.
I think the only ones you may have an issue with could be the golf and Leon estates because of their weight. All the others have good reputations as tow cars. Having said that our other car is a golf and would tow our unit if I needed to.
Example: I have a 2012 Octavia estate 2.0TDi 4x4 mass in service 1,495kg. Caravan mtplm 1,318kg giving a 88% tow ratio. New standard Octavia estate is around 100kg lighter than mine. Depending on weight of caravan the Superb would be a good choice or the Octavia for a light'ish van, maybe the Sprite range.
They all are the same engine and running gear.
I'd stick with the Passat estate & I would of thought 1400 would be no problem, if anyone had one at your place see if you can borrow it and run it over a weigh bridge.

Anyone know how much it cost for new number plates for a caravan.
Just paid £7.00 for a yellow plate. 👍
Thought it would cost more than that. Don't mind that small charge.
Talking to some colleagues today who owns caravans, tow bar and electrics have always been spot on. But he did say that he has a back up plan for a car if needed from family member to tow his caravan if needed (touch wood) he has never had to ask yet!!!
Lunar models look quite nice and light, anyone have any feedback on the brand pls
