Hi Guys n Gals,
Right straight to the point, I get very confused with the towing weights.
I have a Skoda 2.0 diesel estate 170 bhp
Kerb weight=1722 kg
85% = 1464 kg
tow ball weight 75k g
Towing capacity 2000 kg
I know I can't tow anything that's heavier than my car.
so I choose a caravan "Sterling Elite Explorer, Twin axle"
Mass in running order. 1413 KG
Max laden weight. 1697. KG
Now the van on it's own I can tow, but laden I can't because it's over 1464 kg
Now here's my problem....
1697 kg is lighter than 1722 kg and far lighter than 2000 kg so I should be able to tow it, but it's heavier than my 85% 1464 kg so I can't tow it. My 95% = 1636 kg
Can I put weight in my car to make it heavier to compensate for the difference in weight, or in my terms, can I weigh the car down to bring the 85% up.
someone PLEASE PLEASE explain all the towing weights in
"Towing weights explained for DUMMIES"
Jargon
85% is only a guide , but if you passed your test after 91 your limited to a total of 3500, if you passed before that and you have towed before take it for a run to see how well it tows
Forget towing capacity , it does not relate to good practice or safety. If you are new to towing you should not tow much more than 75% perhaps 80%.
The 75 g tow bar is probably the max nose weight it can take I'd thr downward pressure on the tow ball when hitched..ave a look on theCaravan Club web site or someone's handbook for a full explanation.
