Hi,
We are about to change our car and i am fancying the above car as in my price range it has all whistles and bangs etc (it is 2007 model) . Our current caravan is a Lunar Quasar 554 which is a light caravan, and at some point will swap to Bailey Cadiz III (slightly heavier). Does anybody have experience of towing in a petrol automatic CRV? We have always had automatics but not petrol. Is this car man enough for the job. Don't want to be at the bottom of the hill at 10 mph! and a queue behind us.
Hi, we have a petrol CRV, 4WD version, 2013. It's the manual version though not auto. The engine is pretty weak, we tow a small camping trailer 450kg max load and that struggles uphill on motorways, you have to plan ahead with gears for hills or overtakes etc, you can't just put your foot down and get out of a situation.
I've read the auto feels even more weak, unless you put it in Sequential mode and change gears using the paddles.
MPG is nothing special, I get 35mpg mainly driving around town, I guess the auto would get more like 28-30.
In all other respects though it is a fantastic car and I don't think there are any petrol SUV's with much more oomph. Maybe an old Lexus RX hybrid.
Hi Jim,
Thanks for reply. In theory it is a match, but we are worrying before committing that we won't get up hills! It is just the diesel versions of what we want come in about 2/3 thousand more expensive so we are undecided. Pity we can't try it out!
ive only towed with the diesel crv a couple times but its great!
doesnt help much, but bearing in mind the road tax is 70£ cheaper a year and mpg is going to get your roughly 150 miles (around 40%) more per tank and with current diesel prices meaning less than a couple of quid difference every time you fill up, depending on your mileage/ how long you own the car it may well pay to find a diesel one.....
edit: assuming 12k miles a year, you could save around £400 per year in running costs....
i did find when looking for my crv that dropping down a range from the EX did save quite a bit of money, and i still managed to get quite a few gadgets, just no leather or sat nag(which is expensive to update anyway)
Happycampers02 - I have driven the 1.6 diesel CRV (the lower power 2WD one, not the higher power 9 speed auto version which replaced the 2.2) as my dad had one. The torque is SO much better than the petrol. Before the petrol CRV I had a diesel FRV with the 2.2 iCTDi rather than the DTEC. That also had much more poke.
Sadly for us, my daily commute is 7 miles each way in stop start traffic. This driving is totally unsuitable for a modern diesel with a DPF, so I had no choice but buy petrol. I was so keen to buy the diesel that I rang 3 different dealers to ask if the DPF would give me trouble and they all said it was possible and that I should buy the petrol.
My mpg has dropped from over 37 to 35 since I "upgraded" my alloys from 17 inch ES ones to 18 inch SR/EX ones. So the higher spec models will drink more.
While it's true the diesel will save you money each year in fuel and road tax, it's worth remembering the petrol is cheaper to insure and service, and the petrol is a less complicated and more reliable engine than the 1.6 or 2.2 diesels. From March next year the road tax on new petrol auto's will be £140, the same flat amount as most other cars, rather than the £230ish it is now.
It's also not clear what taxes will be imposed on diesels in the coming years due to their NOX levels.
It's a tough choice with pros and cons to both engines...
Your right, no dpf in the 2.2 ictdi, the FRV can be had up to 2009 with that engine, the CRV switched to the Dtec with DPF before then, maybe around 07-08?
Hi,
I had a 2007 CRV 2.2 diesel and apart from the rather agricultural gear change, it made an excellent towcar for our 1500kg van.
Currently we tow with a 2014 CRV 2.2 which has a better gearbox, otherwise not a lot of difference.
Sadly they have now stopped making the 2.2 version of the CRV, so that will be the end of the line, their other offerings in the CRV range max out a a 1600 diesel, which I doubt will have the oomph needed, even if the super friendly salesman tries to convince us otherewise.
Everyone has got slightly off subject - what I wanted to know is if anybody has a CRv petrol (2L) automatic and tows. I am querying this rather than how good a diesel would be. Any help appreciated, and thanks for replies of course in any event.
Don't know if you've seen this old post on the 2ltr.

Interesting link.
Without being able to "test tow" with the petrol auto it would be more of a gamble as reviews are mixed.
If the choice comes down to price, as you mentioned the diesel version of what you want being several thousand more, a lower spec or slightly higher mileage diesel ictdi might be a safer bet.....
Good luck with your choice, the CRV is a great car in either case
I have just bought an Eldiss 1421
And I am thinking of using my Crv petrol 2.00 auto
To tow
At the present we tow a small clubman with a 9; saab
Anyone had experience of the Honda
?

Probably not much help, only tl say that l have a 1.4 Auto Honda Jazz 2013, and to say that its sluggish is an understatement. My previous 53plate Jazz manual was a much different beast and capable of towing a fully laden camping trailer with a full hatch and 4 adults onboard.
I inherited the Jazz l have now as a second car to my CRV 2014 2.2 Vtec, but it really has put me off owning another Honda auto in the future, the power difference between the manual and auto models are so great.
