We've decided to upgrade our car. We currently have a volvo v70 D5 and tow a Ace Award Northstar.
Weve done quite a bit of towing around France.
We felt vulnerable this year when overtaking articulated lorries as we felt we were being sucked into the lorry.
We were only going 60mph and had just had all the stabiliser pads renewed - no oil etc on the towbar.
So we were thinking of getting a heavier tow vehicle - probably a 4x4. This would make sense as we keep our caravan at a friends farm which has a 2 mile off road drive to get to.
Just after recommendations and advice from any 4x4 owners. We also live at the top of a hill which does get tricky in winter - we often leave our car at the bottom of the hill in snowy conditions. So we wouldn't be townies driving around in a 4x4 for no reason!!!
suggestions please!

We had a couple of weeks in Austria this summer, pulling a folding camper (yeah, I know, not much of a challenge) behind ours, and often forgot I was towing.
It depends upon how big your budget is really and if you want an suv (most of which essentiallly just pretend to be an off road 4x4) or a proper off road 4x4
With money no object? I'd choose the current shape disco when they bring the new one out later this year as the discounts off a 6 month old one will be substantial, especially if you can pick up an ex-demo, chances are it'll be kitted out with every concievable extra.
If you've a budget of £10k or so, I'd go for an older landcruser, you can pick up a very tidy 05 pate with all the toys for around £9k

Of course, there's a new one out shortly.
The Aussie,s say if you want to go into the outback get a Land Rover, but if you want to come out again get a Toyota
Hyundai Santa Fe AWD, 5 seater (more boot space). But go for the older 2010 - 2011 model. It was consistently given second place behind the Discovery. You can get a reasonable example for less than £10,000 if you look.
The new Santa Fe's are prettier, but doesn't score as high for towing.
sorry - should have put budget.
It will be a 2nd hand car and we are able to go up to £9000 max (ideally around £8000) would give us a bit of money then to buy a motor mover for the van.
We've towed all round Europe with the volvo v70 (2002) and she's got the umph and power but its the stability and weight that she lacks.

it pulls really well, but because it is low profile we struggle with the large articulated lorries. We have a nose weight quage and check when towing, we always check our caravan tyres (had a blow out last year, so its something that we double, triple check before towing).
Its time to upgrade so wanted something heavier. We've talked to others when on sites who have the same issue with a low car. Need to up the torque.

Discovery 2/3/4
But remember any 4x4, or SUV, that does not have the correct tyres fitted for the job will get stuck off road.
The amount of people i have seen over the years, driving big 4x4 on lanes, or fields, with normal road tyres on and getting stuck, and blaming the 4x4.
You have the wrong kit fitted then it is not going to work?
And Bob a Skoda Yetti towing 1500kg would be at 92%
So at 1700kg i dread to think, and to be honest can't see why you have recomended that weight as safe for towing on a highway.
We already own an L200 pick up but keep it for off road only (its MOT'd) but not used off the farm, - we love it and use it to tow the caravan when moving around the farm.
We are aware of tyres (as we have to buy chunky ones for the L200 pick up) and know that we would need road tyres which don't do the same job off road. We've also seen many caravaners spin and slide on the hilly ground of the caravan site.
Just want a good alround vehicle that we feel safer in
