We are looking into getting a Caravan for the first time with a MPTLM of 1280kg and our car had a minimum kerb weight of 1299kg and a Braked Towing weight of 1500kg, we are also new to this and are looking for as much advice as possible. Our car is a VW Golf Gt tdi 140bhp 2009 model

Terrible Advice!

What it can tow and what it's safe to tow are completely different. If you are new to towing it's recommended that you need a car with a kerbweight of at least 1500kg to tow a caravan with a maximum weight of 1280kg. Furthermore if you passed your test after 1997 the MAM (maximum authorised mass) of the car must be no greater than 2220kg. with that caravan.

I can't see a golf having a payload of almost a tonne! It's legal to tow that but the car isn't very heavy so take it easy!

Because its the 140 tdi, and has a wheel in virtually all 4 corners , it will tow your van, being a HGV driver you should know power to weight, it will be similar to driving your artic, but to stop the OH I must not do that brigade, keep the max weight of the van to around 1300, or less

The Golf Sportline Estate is 200kg. heavier than the GT Tdi and this is a much better match than the original proposal.

Philmc your set up is legal, but not ideal your caravan is almost the same weight as your car, in high winds towing that van with you car could end up with the tail wagging the dog.

if you hang around here long enough you'll notice that Skodabob will recomend that a VW group car to tow just about anything no matter how dangerous it is.
diesel steves car is 200kgs heavier than you car so a total different kettle of fish
