Hi we're looking to upgrade our 2 berth van to a 4 berth due to the family expanding.
Our problem is we're worried that our Peugeot 307 estate wont be able to pull a larger van.
We cant afford to upgrade to a bigger car and a caravan so we need some recommendations on a lighter 4 berth if there is such a thing?!
Also we're a bit confused about the nose weights as our cars tow bar nose weight limit is 60kg but most caravans I've tried to research are 70 or 75kg.
Does anyone pull a 4 berth with a Peugeot or does anyone have any recomendations on light vans.
Any help would be appreciated.

Firstly we need to know how much your car can tow as that will limit your choice of caravan. Nose weight can be adjusted by careful loading but the nose weight should be between 4% and 7% of the max weight of the caravan and you need the noseweight as heavy as possible (60kg in your case) to aid stability.

We had a Bailey Ranger 460/4 which had a max weight just under 1200kg and other manufacturers produced similar weight models. It would help to have some idea of your budget to give some ideas as to what you could look out for but you need to check the weight your car can tow first.

We think after reading the offical manual that came with the car the max towing rate is 1300kg.
does that help?
Our budget is about £3000. not looking for really new just something thats going to last us awhile with out to many problems.

I would check the kerb weight of the car as well as I thought most 307 models weighed less than 1300 and you obviously need to keep well under the kerbweight. At 1300 kerb weight an 85% match would be around 1100kg.

With your budget you would be looking at a private sale of a caravan from the early 2000's. I would look at Bailey Ranger and lightweight Lunar models on ebay to give you an idea of what's available. Anything you are interested in would need the usual checks for damp etc but you may find some bargains at this time of year.

If you give us the details of your car, engine and year etc we may be able to check the weights for you.

It looks like the kerb weight is around 1380 so 85% would give you a figure of 1173, our 4 berth Ranger had a max weight of 1184 so something in that range would be worth looking at.That would also give you around 5% noseweight at 60kg so it would require careful loading and driving.

Hope this helps.

Rob

Do you think we could get away with 1200kg's as not seeing many under that?

Probably but I wouldn't want to go much heavier than that. We towed our Ranger with a Focus estate 1.6 diesel which has the 115 bhp version of your engine and it was ok but could have done with a bit more power especially on some hills in France. As long as you don't load the car too heavily I think you would be ok with around 1200kg as long as it is stable with 60kg noseweight.

The 4 berth Bailey Rangers should be around 1150-1200 depending on the model and there should be similar models from Lunar as they did some lightweight caravans as well.

Load lightly, take as little as you can. We used to take a load of food with us and most times it would all come back.

We not take breakfast items and buy anything we need on the go. We used to have a pile of trays and cups and plates and dishes etc etc etc....

We cut it all down to 4 of everything except cups where we make tea when people are setting up, so have spares.

Its amazing how the weight soon builds.

Load the car as much as you can compared to the caravan, but keep the weight as far forward as you can otherwise the rear may sag.
