My partner and I work at county shows throughout the summer and next year we're looking at taking a years sabbatical from our 9-5's, buying a large twin axel caravan, doing a summer of touring the county shows then heading abroad for the winter with it.
Now, the technical question..... I've done my B+E license, and the train weight is going to be over 3.5t - but would towing the caravan with our work kit inside it mean that I'd need a tacho and operators license?
I've looked everywhere for an answer but can't find anything. I'd like to think it doesn't classify as "for hire or reward" as technically the caravan has nothing to do with our work. The weeks that we're not at county shows we'd be touring local area and staying in the caravan whilst renting out flat out.
tacho and ol? nope not needed, however what with your personal items for living you are going to have to watch you don't overload the caravan, what are you intending on using as a tow vehicle?
I've got a long wheelbase 2.8 diesel Mitsi Paj. Fully spec'd for overlanding, uprated shocks & springs etc. Plate says it can drag 3.3t - I would fully believe it too!!
and what type of equipment are you using/selling? because the car + caravan will be loaded to around 3.8 ton just for personal use, then the added equipment you intend on taking on top of that, bulk wise I think you are going to be pushing your luck what caravan are you intending to use?
We're entertainers so just have costumes with us for work - nothing too heavy. The Pajero is usually loaded up to its 2.8t limit for overlanding, the caravan is an Ace Twinstar Supreme with a max mass of 1.8t. Total weight of 4.6t, way under the 6.1t total train weight the paj can handle so should be fine. I've dragged 2.5t yachts up wet slipways before and it doesn't miss a beat.
the paj isn't capable of having 2.8 tons in it! that the engine size, lol, as for towing a 2.5 t yacht, well that's one thing but a caravan has the properties of air flow of a brick! totally different matter when on a road
Haha, it is indeed! Max laden weight of the LWB is 2780, towing capacity is 3300! They're slow when unladen, but they just don't seem to notice adding any weight to them - I've done a fair bit of towing trailered vehicles with it and you just barely notice it, even with a brand new Range Rover on a trailer behind it. Especially with the auto box, it's just effortless.
Not quite as effortless as my old 3.5 petrol shogun, but we don't talk about that..... (Big ends went, very sad time!)
Lol, it was around the grounds of an airfield. I'd towed my old MX5 there for a test and tune day, this guy mullered his gearbox playing with his range. He needed it off the airfield or face the charges they give you for abandoning your vehicle on a live airfield. Always found it funny how he was frantic about not wanting the £150 fine, but didn't bat an eyelid that he'd just destroyed the gearbox in his rather expensive v8 range!
Had plenty of Subarus, Double-stacked mx5's and the like though. I'm the only one in our group with a vehicle that will tow, let alone has a towbar!
I didn't like the wallowing much either, especially not with a 2" lift on it. Got some uprated springs and shocks which have delt with it nicely though. Still rides smooth, just doesn't feel like a boat around the corners! The air sprung seats definitely help too :)
