I've got an Astra twin top and it can pull my caravan JUST, as long as it's near enough empty. However I don't like the "just" part of it so I'm looking to get something larger. (before anyone jawdrops at me, I passed my test in 1989, I can legally tow my empty caravan with my twin top, I just like to take things like clothes and food for the dog with me when we go away, so the twinnie has got to go)
I've got a Bailey Pageant which is a little under 1400 Kg when fully laden.
I'm looking at C class convertables, possibly e class but they might be just an enormous smidge out of my price range, unless I went for an old one, but with going to France in it for 3 months in the summer, I don't want anything that's so old it's not covered under insurance.
Does anone tow with a 4 series?
Thanks all

I have seen a Saab 93 towing a caravan and also Audi A4, I have a Saab convertible but its not our tug!
I would think a Mercedes E class convertible would also be good.

what about a volvo C70, its got a cracking diesel engine ideal for towing.as for going to france for 3 months you would be better with a car with good air con, A friend of mine went to spain with his soft top corvette, went about 30 miles from ferry at santander with roof down and had to stop and put hood up and run aircon, sun to hot got burnt.kept hood up full length of holiday
convertibles are usually heavier so if rated for towing at all (some cars are not, like the mini) they would be better than the equivalent saloon car. i think the evoque convertible is nearly 2000kg kerb weight where the regular is about 1700kg. i have seen convertibles towing.
not sure what you mean by 'only just when caravan is empty'?
towing weights are based on the MLPM (max loaded weight of the caravan on the type plate) and the max tow on your cars V5 whether the caravan is empty or full.
------------- First van bailey ranger 550/6
Now the proud owner of a coachman amara
I towed my Fleurette Tamaris with a Renault Megane CC (1.5dci. Towed it no problem and got around 40 mpg.
Now got a Bailey Ranger whish is JUST within the towing limit of the Megane, and although it pulls it no problem - I'm down to 28 mpg.
Now looking for a VW Eos.

not if you passed your test in year dot. I just have to be driving a car that's capable of towing what the trailer behind me IS at that precise moment in time, not what it couldbe.
Damn stupid I agree and it's not something I do

Steve a volvo is a cracking idea. I'd completely forgotten about them.
We'll be ok in a convertable :D We've gone to the alps in 40+ degrees solo with the twintop & rarely had to put the lid up. However the drink holder between the two front seats was repurposed as factor 50 lotion holder
