We currently have a Ford SMax 09 reg, 2.0L diesel, done 44000 miles.
It's starting to cost me quite a bit to maintain, and I'm wondering if it's time to cut my losses.

When I bought it, I drove about 60 miles a day to work and back. Now I've moved jobs, and I do about 5 miles a day to work! So I'm not certain that diesel is my best option any more.

Last year I had to have the turbo replaced. This year, it got all gunked up and cost £150 to sort it out (have to say, it's now running beautifully though, possibly better than it ever has before). It also cost a fair bit on tyres this time because something needed realigning (not tracking, can't remember what), and apparently the brakes will need doing in the next 6 months or so.

It's also making an ominous noise at the back particularly when I turn hard right, or go over a speed hump. Garage can't replicate it, but they said they'll look again when the do the brakes in a bit. I've no idea what it is, but it sounds as though when it finally goes, it will be an expensive noise! (If you see what I mean!)

So. I'm starting to look for a new car, but I'm not in any massive hurry, so I thought I can wait for a good deal.

We are a family of 4. We tow a mid sized trailer. No plans to change to a caravan at this point. We take an obscene amount of stuff with us when camping (don't know why - we try not to, but it just happens!).

Don't fancy a Ford again because of the problems with this one. Really can't decide over petrol v diesel, and normal car v SUV. I like the look and feel of SUVs, but I'm not convinced I actually NEED one, compared to the extra cost.

So far I like
Kia Sportage
Kia Ceed
Toyota RAV4
Honda HRV
Honda CRV

I did like the idea of a Nissan Qashqai until the dealers were really, really rude, and then someone told me they had Renault engines - so not sure about the reliability. But they seem really popular, i see them everywhere, so maybe I should try another dealer?

Any opinions or advice gratefully received because there's WAY too much choice out there for me!

There no difference in reliability on any cars these days & no good or bad. It's just down to luck with the particular car you get. So choose whatever you fancy. It helps if you drive smoothly, avoid heavy braking & don't let it labour uphill, especially when towing.

I've got an 09 Citroen Berlingo from new with 80k miles up, probably a 3rd of that towing a 900kg caravan. All thats ever gone wrong is egr valve & that was probably because I was using Tesco diesel all the time for the points. I've used branded diesel since.

I've always had it serviced at main dealer workshop which at least means you get correct grade of oil which is important with modern diesels. Current Euro6 diesels mostly use AdBlue so dpf probs on short runs should be a thing of the past.

I've got a 62 reg Peugeot partner tepee which is brilliant. Bought it 2-1/2 years old for 8K with 23K on the clock 20 months ago.

Diesel and really comfy, sprightly and holds everything you could possibly want.

As opensauce always have main dealer service.

I had main dealer service for the first 4 years, but since then I've used a recommended local garage, and they've been loads better.

My local dealer for this one was a bit rubbish to be honest. They fitted front parking sensors which never worked and they couldn't work out how to fix them so we gave up and they just gave me two years free servicing instead. Then the rear parking sensors stopped working and they couldn't fix those either.

Then they fixed something in the engine (can't remember what now) and made the problem worse so I got another two years free servicing. Then I decided that it might be easier to go elsewhere!

Whilst it's a double edged sword needing the warranty. Having bought a 3 year old Kia Ceed SW a couple of years back, been extremely impressed, even minor niggles replaced under warranty(a noisy rear wiper engine and the external rear high level brake light water ingress). Still have another couple of years left too. Doesn't set the world on fire but then I'm only in it for short periods then those few long trips a year

I've had a rav4 2.2 diesel from new for 5 years, done 86000 miles, don't do dealer servicing because they rip you off; car has been perfect, no warranty issues only a couple of recalls. Don't use supermarket diesels; I stick to Shell and use additives. I tow a 1600kg caravan with no problems. It's my third Toyota and I won't use anything else. I had a Land Rover Discovery and nothing but problems, which is why I upgraded to Toyota. Check out the Which Magazine reliability league tables if you know someone who is a member or get trial membership for a quid. That's my views on the matter and I see you've learn't your lesson with Fords/

Unfortunately that is just not true. The most reliable source is probably the Warranty Direct reliability Index because it is based on actual claims as opposed to owner perceptions. It has just been updated and Japanese manufacturers fill the top six places. Honda and Toyota have been at the top for the last eight years, while the prestige German brands do quite poorly. Ford is the highest rated European manufacturer. As stated above the Landrover Discovery has a terrible record.

That's why I think I fancy Toyota or Honda, but as mentioned above, the Kia warranty is very tempting.

With the diesel additives - will these help my Diesel engine if I'm only doing short journeys? And what should I be looking for?

As my mechanic has advised, I'm trying to take it for a good long run at least once a month, but as I live near Manchester, the reality is that I take it for a good long sit in a traffic jam on the M60 at least once a month!

44,000 is really low for it to start having such serious issues.
Are you sure it hasn't been 'clocked' or had the s**t driven out of it before you got it.

All the advice on various forums suggests that if you are doing a lot of short journeys you should buy petrol to avoid potentially expensive DPF problems. Both the Honda and Toyota petrol engines appear to be even more reliable than the diesels as they are less complicated.

I cannot comment on the effectiveness of diesel additives as I have never needed to use them.

Why not consider an estate car, plenty of load / carry space in the rear, good payload, so you can get some more camping gear!!!
In 4.5 years with lots of short journeys too and from work, have never had any DPF problems, normal running keeps it clear, it also does a programmed regen every 400-600 miles. If stationary or in slow moving traffic, you know when it does a regen, engine revs go up to 1,000rpm and the fans kick in to clear the build up of heat, for around 10mins. So do not be put off with a diesel engine.

Skoda Octavia Estate 2.0TDi, better still if you can get a 4x4 variant.

It's the driver & the servicing not the car. Reliability surveys are meaningless. Drill down into them. For example, which car fails the mot the most? & then notice failure is on headlamp bulb or similar.

Best one was a few yrs ago with people carriers. Near the top was VW Sharan, middle was Seat Alambra & near bottom was Ford Galaxy. At the time these 3 cars all came down the same production line with only the badges different.

It helps if car is driven sympathetically at all times but equally important is servicing. Whether done by main dealer or independent it has got to be done properly & on time. Quality brand oil of correct spec must be used along with original equipment quality filters & other parts.

If the car is serviced inexpertly using cheap oil & cheap parts or services are missed then it will become unreliable.

The Warranty Direct Index is based on actual claims. To maintain an after market warranty the car must be serviced according to manufacturer's guidelines or the claim will be rejected.

Or should we just assume that Hondas, Toyotas, Mazdas etc. are better serviced and their owners just drive their cars more sympathetically? Unlikely.
