We have a Conway Cruiser folding camper, Max gross weight 900kg. Es are considering buying a 2015 Citroen C3 1.2 Puretech (petrol). Not expecting it to tow the camper, but any chance it would? The manufacturer suggests it has a braked towing weight of 1100kg. Surely that can't be right? Would Citroen be able to tell me either way?
Thanks
Depends which variant. The 110bhp turbo will tow it resonably well, the 82bhp non turbo less well but either will do the job. How fast do you want to go? Otherwise go for the diesel, even the 90bhp version has more torque than the turbo petrol but not by much.
There's towing it and towing it. A car may struggle to maintain speed on the motorway and slight inclines but still be able to tow it. Patience may be required.
As a folding camper has very little wind resistance as compared with a full height caravan, it will probably do a good job of it.
There should also be a gross train weight quoted and the max tow may have to be reduced if the car is heavily laden.
Try towcar.info or similar. I had a quick look and it says it lacks power and suggests you hold onto 2nd gear until 50mph.. This is not from experience though just from performance figures and weights etc.
Engine power it states "just sufficient". Then goes on to say on motorway inclines you may not be able to hold 50mph in 3rd gear.
You can do 60mph but probably at very close to full throttle.
But it is rather flawed. Take an outfit where it says power is lacking with an unladen car and 900kg trailer. Then add 300kg to the car and suddenly it pulls up the hills better? I think their figures need a tweak.
