I am looking for a reliable tow car good on fuel to tow the weights below
bailey ranger 550/6 2006
Mass in Running Order (Kg) - 1078kg
Maximum Technical Permissible Laden Mass (Kg) - 1326kg
I need a car for both town driving when not using it for towing and when towing
what will give me both good fuel economy and the lowest tax group also no DPF i dont fancy a mondeo tdci as they have a number of issues
Strange, I had two company Ford Mondeos when I was working, the first finished with 116k with not a thing, not even a clutch, the second was equally as good plus towed my van all over France on a couple of occasions. I bought the second one when I retired and kept it for a year selling it at 89k, it needed an EGR valve, and nothing else. So a combined 205K with no more than servicing and an EGR. I was not aware of any issues.
I also have a 2009 Mondeo tdci had it for 7 years since it was 4 months old and it has never missed a beat only needed normal service items now on 84,000 regularly towing 1500kgs will be selling it soon as getting a Ford Kuga after xmas

If you go looking for problems on the internet, you'll find them for all cars. Nowt wrong with the Mondeo in general: you might get unlucky but that's true of all cars.
As alluded to in the above posts. It is not the car it is the service history & previous drivers. Nothing you can do with previous drivers but you really need to in your price range find a car with full main dealer service history to at least ensure oil has been changed on time with correct oil used & OE parts have been fitted.
To tow that weight the most car for you will find for your money will be a Mondeo or some sort of people carrier, Galaxy or similar. Otherwise you will be looking at SUVs, Sorento or similar.
To get the the car you want for the price you want to pay you could be looking at massive repair bills whatever you get if you are unlucky.
By stipulating 'no DPF' you further limit your choice. I think the Mondeo tdci had them fitted from 2007, but it can be difficult with some models to work out when they were introduced.
Two of the last models without DPFs were the VW PD units and Honda's cdti. All the Mk 7 Honda Accords use the cdti engine which is very reliable and many will be privately owned with FSH. The Toyota Avensis (2003-08) with the D-4D engine is similar, but it may be a little light for your caravan.
Saab diesels have dpf fitted. I have a 9 year old 93 convertible, I have had no dpf issues.
Parts are no problem as a lot of service items are same as Vauxhall. There is also a dedicated parts company called Orio who took over saab parts.
Theyy are very nice cars, well built and nice to drive.Had mine 7 years, its our fun car and runabout.

We have the Passat estate B7. Lovely tow car and town car but it does have DPF. Probably all will have in time so I really wouldn't let it bother you. Had Mondeo estate previously and no problems there aswell. You should get a nice B6 Passat for the budget you have, whatever you get, just enjoy
