I know this question will have been asked a million times, but just looking at new tow cars, and again seem to be going round in circles!!!! The one car that i keep seeing around is the sportage so started looking at them. The one model that is affordable to us is the sportage 1.7 crdi isg 2. Does anyone tow with this model, and does know the towing figures for this model?

Just not sure on the overall figures on it and the bhp etc.

Our van is 1200kg max weight and 867kg empty.

Would the sportage mentioned above be more than adequate for the job??

Its a diesel with an average power/torque output and will tow upto 1400kg max.

Have you driven one though?

What puzzles me is why buy the Sportage with 2 wheel drive only?
eee i remember the first ones etc etc.. :)

PS.. are you sure of your vans weights? 867kg MIRO (not empty) and 1100kg laden?

AWD model would be better, its heavier and better traction, especially towing.
I cannot see the point in 2wd SUVs. Each to their own though.

For just a grand more you can get a Mitsubishi ASX 4. Same towing spec, and they tow superbly!

BUT, you get a 2.2litre 148BHP engine with 4wd and an intelligent torque converter auto gear box that adapts to your driving style - even when towing. 5 years warranty, and they hold their value really well. Our first ASX achieved a trade in value of over 50% after 5 years and 40,000 miles. Add on a bundle of extras not found on the Sportage 2....

The one thing you don't see is a lot of ASX around, a well kept secret!

Worth a look.

Go for the bigger brother the Sorento and you get a 2.2 litre 194 bhp engine(200 on newest models) and a good warranty.
Santa Fe/Sportage are have same chassis and running gear as the Kias.

I can't quote stretch to the Sorrento unfortunately. What about the 2.0 134 bhp kx 2 model diesel. Is that adequate to pull majority of the single axle vans out there?

We will excuse the typing error Dave ... The Sportage is a Kia.

The Hyundai Santa Fe is the same chassis/ running gear as the Sorento.
The Kia Sportage is the same as the Hyundai Tucson (formally known as the iX35 and before that the Tucson)

Understand, to much of a stretch unfortunately. Will the 2ltr crdi be adequate enough to use as a tow car though, still taking into account the 85% rule??

Just buy a car , most larger family saloons or estates will tow your van

Bob's usual helpful reply-not! SUVs are much better for towing, that's probably why so many people have them.
I reckon the Sportage will be fine.

The Kia Optima , petrol or diesel, will tow your van , why splash out for something that will only tow a few times a year, and cost more to run
