Hi thinking of getting a caravan but also have to get bigger car was thinking of a Skoda Octavia 1.9 tdi estate maybe to pull a little 2 berth say 1000/1100 max say's good match on towsure but would like to hear from people who have towed with one any good Thanks
You should be OK with that weight, the 1.9 is a good engine. I have the Octavia estate 4x4 2.0TDi with the CR engine, my kerbweight is 1,495kg and pull 1,318kg (88% match) with no problem at all. You will also have lots of load / carry space in the back.
Don't discount the Golf estate either - it was more expensive new but second-hand the prices will probably be closer. It's mechanically pretty much identical but is much nicer inside - the seats especially.
my partner had a 09 plate golf sport line estate 2.0 ,140 bhp. it to was a good tow car with the sport suspension and plenty power, its kerb weight was just over 1500kgs
According to Parkers the Golf 1.9 Tdi estate weighs 1361kg. which would be fine for towing a caravan with a maximum weight of 1100kg. (around 80% ratio).
Just note that the 2009 model Octavia Estate 1.9 Tdi at 1325kg. is considerably lighter than the earlier model, but this would still be fine for what you are proposing to tow.
The Passat 1.9 is nearly 300kg. heavier than the Golf and while this should be even more stable, when combined with a caravan, performance will suffer with this engine.
You may be better looking at the Passat 2.0Tdi (140 BHP).
