You need to check the towing limit of your car which should be in the handbook, on the V5 or the weight plate of the car. If the max weight of the car and caravan exceeds 3500 kg you will need a B+E licence if you took your test after 1997.

Cheers for the reply, Is the towing limit not 85% of the kerb weight? Cheers

85% is a guideline not a rule but in many cases the max tow limit of the car can be lower than 85% of the kerbweight and the manufacturer's limits must not be exceeded. Working on the weights you have given you would be towing at 88% which would be ok as longas you are not exceeding the car's limit or any licence restrictions.

Have you read my posts from last night? You need to check the weights for your vehicle, we can only guess at them as we don't have the exact details for your car.

If the tow limit for your car is over 1314 then it is ok to tow the caravan but it may not be a good match. You haven't given the details of the exact model of your car but a quick look at the specs gives kerbweights of between 1428 and 1456 so in a worst case scenario you would have a 92% match which should still be ok but is over the recommendation for a novice.

Check the weights as mentioned above and you will be able to see if the match is ok.

As mentioned previously without the exact details I can only guess at your weights but a quick look gives some versions a kerbweight of 1428, if you give me the exact model details I'll look it up for you and you can check
against your vehicle. There are several body types on the Vectra range, loads of trim levels and possibly a choice of manual and auto gearboxes so it is impossible to guess at your particular vehicle.

The first weight is the max weight of the car, the second is the max gross train weight which is the max permissible weight of car and trailer added together. the max tow weight is the GTW minus the car weight so in this case 3525-2025=1500 kg so you can tow up to 1500 kg.

However it is recommended that the trailer should not be more than 85% of the kerb weight of the car. We still don't know the details of the car but in the worst case scenario I mentioned above you would be at 92% which would still be ok but you would have to very careful with loading etc in particular the nose weight because you are getting closer to the tail wagging the dog situation as you get closer to or exceed 100% of the tow car weight.

You are at 88% IF the kerbweight is 1500 for your actual car. So slightly over the recommended 85% but ok if you are careful.
