Thinking of changing my car. Got a 2011 audi a4 estate 143 bhp on an 11 plate

Thinking of changing to 2013 passat estate blue motion highline 140 bhp on a 63 plate

Reading the info they will both tow what I want. But are they any good at being a tow car

Thanks
Marc

Beware some lower tow limits on Eco models.

Which engine is that and whats your intended max tow weight?

Been looking at the swift challenger 585. 6 berth Fixed bunks.

Info I've found on the passat is a tow weight of 1800kg

The Passat around that year has a kerbweight of around 1600 kg depending on the spec, it may have a stated max tow of 1800 kg but that would not be advisable or safe.

What weight is the caravan you are thinking of getting?

Do you have a post 1997 licence?

Avoid the tsi petrol like the plague, we had one and it used oil like a two stroke . Also in my personal experience the dsg gear box is also crap.deisel manual is the way foward i think, only one clutch to wear out.

Towing 1400 with a car weighing 1600 should be ok but you need to check the weights of the actual car. The Passat did win tow car awards a few times so perhaps a quick look at Tow Car of the Year Awards might be worthwhile, some of the tests may be on You Tube as well.

I don't know what year caravan you are looking at but I would have thought that a Challenger 585 would be heavier than that so the caravan weight needs checking as well. I did have a quick look for a Challenger 585 earlier but I couldn't find a 6 berth model. If you can give a year for the caravan I can have another look for you.

I found a Challenger Sport in 2012 and 13, it's only a 5 berth and has an MTPLM of 1485. If the kerbweight of the Passat is 1575 or so that gives a 95% match so it is still doable but it's higher than I would like and I've been towing for a very long time. At 95% you would have to be very careful with loading and noseweight and for me that is too close to the tail wagging the dog situation.

Of course if the caravan is a 6 berth it is probably heavier and the match would be even worse but that's the nearest caravan I could find with the details given.

If a 1.9 tdi 105 bhp superb can tow that van, without hardly noticing the van is on the back, a 140 cr. VW certainly will tow it all day long

Parkers shows the kerbweight at 1571kg, you wont want to be towing 1800kg.

Recommended 85% ratio of 1335kg.

The caravan you looking is is around 1557 KGS, id check the kerbweight of your car, if its around 1750 you should be ok if not look for a lighter van

Legally it can be done but you could end up with the tail wagggin the dog effect.
