Brilliant i have just discovered that by sticking some l plates on the van my wife can tow the caravan , provided im there to supervise. So if you have b+e entitlement and your other half doesnt and your mam for both caravan and towing vehicle exeeds 3.5 tons just buy her some l plates and share the driving.

Or find a lonely old person with b+e entitlement and take them with you . They will be glad of the company and it will be probably cheaper.

If you are supervising a learner driver then you are responsible for any mistakes they make including speeding & points go on your licence as well as their's. If you you are caught over drink/drive limit while supervising you lose your licence. You can also get nicked for using non hands free mobile phone & for falling asleep.
If you supervise then effectively you are the driver & subject to same laws as if you are behind the wheel. You cannot relax while the learner driver takes the strain. If one wanted to supervise UK learner driver abroad one would need to check local law to see if it was allowed.
If wife is named driver on op's car insurance then suggest he contacts his insurer & requests advice on whether this is allowed on policy without extra premium.

The op is a good example of an idea that sounds good but isn't really & shows that anything used outside it's remit is not normally a good idea. The purpose of supervising a learner driver is to allow them to reach test standard & allow them to attain a full licence to drive that vehicle. Not simply for convenience as suggested by op.
If supervising driver thinks they can sit in the passenger seat & eat/drink/sleep/make phonecalls while their 'trainee' drives then they might end up with points on their licence. If learner causes a fatal accident it could be supervisor not learner driver that goes to jail.
If hubby thinks he can drink a gallon of beer last night on site then supervise wife to drive next morning he needs to know if stopped he will get breath tested as well.
Insurance only covers if one is licensed to drive vehicle so a named driver on car insurance with no b+e may not be insured to drive b+e outfit even with insured driver supervising so insured certainly needs to contact insurer to check all this.

As usual Opensauce is right.
There are quite enough risks on the road already without people adding more.

They are considering allowing learner drives on motorways so will it make driving on motorways any more dangerous?

This is where the law is silly because she can tow within the law in our bmw as the the mam for the whole outfit is under 3.5 . But towing with the bmw feels unsafe under powered and scary, with the van stable powerful enough to keep up with trafic better view of road in front and behind just better! I think i will stick with doing the towing on my own as im probably not the best passenger .

If you see how badly some drive on the motorway then the standard mayb actually improve.
Car had not been used for a couple of weeks so thought take the long way around to my destination and jump on the motorway. Van ahead tried squeezing past the lorry on the slip road but didnt quite make it, then drove over the solid white lined chevrons to get into the inside lane where he couldnt go any further.
I was in the left hand lane and almost drew level before he managed to swap lanes, he changed lanes several times in a bid to get ahead, then within 1 mile he wanted the same exit that i wanted and joined 2 cars up from me.
The whole point was?
I was in the left hand lane doing 50 ish all the way. Taking the left hand exit where they open up the hard shoulder at busy times.
I should have my dashcam running more often.

Learners on motorways is a proposal and it is with a qualified driving instructor in a dual control car, so not joe blogs teaching the kids.

The problem is though that you are not deemed as a passenger but as an instructor teaching a pupil on L plates to perform correctly and safely which also comes with the responsibility and accountability of any accident.

According to below you can.
SUPERVISING A B+E LEARNER
In April 2010 new rules were introduced for those supervising certain learner drivers but they only affected those supervising VOCATIONAL categories such as C1 C1+E D1 & D1+E where the supervising driver had those categories given to them for free when they passed a pre 1997 car test.
They do not affect those with a pre 1997 B+E licence who wish to supervise a B+E learner.
All B licence holders have B+E provisional on the paper part of their licence and can tow an empty or loaded trailer on all roads including motorways.
The usual rules apply when a learner is driving -
The supervising driver must be aged over 21
The supervising driver must have held a B+E licence for at least 3 years
L plates must be fitted to the front of the vehicle and the rear of the trailer
Correct insurance for a B+E learner

Before 1997 drivers could drive up to 7.5t MAM truck or truck/trailer combinations straight after passing car driving test. It was decided this should be reduced to 3.5tonnes for safety reasons & the restriction was intended to affect commercial vehicle drivers. The 'grandfather rights' allowed those already working driving up to 7.5t to continue to work without taking a further test.
At the time very few recreational caravan outfits exceeded 3.5t combined MAM. The law was never intended to affect caravanners & has only done so more recently with heavier more well equipped caravans requiring larger towcars.
