So many variables, which model/engine do you have?
What weight are you towing? How aerodynamic is your caravan?
Whats your driving style?
Engine size and power output and driving style can make a huge difference.
I had a 2L diesel Mondeo with 6 speed gearbox. Towing in 6th was fine but actually used more fuel than in 5th gear.
The ECU was pumping in more fuel to maintain roadspeed in 6th compared to 5th where the torque required was lower.
Bit like using a pedal bike on a steep hill, in 1st its easy to pedal, but move up the gears and you need to put more effort into it. Even to maintain the same speed.
I have found a smaller less powerful engine will use substantially more furl when towing compared to a larger more powerful engine.
But the journey will also affect the MPG. Going to Cornwall i use more fuel do to those dips and climbs on the A30.
Compared to going north where its fairly level by comparison.
You can only compare like with like. With so little details of towing vehicle & caravan weight nobody can answer your question.
To help you I will guess. You have 2.0litre tdi diesel Tiguan & the loaded weight of your caravan is 1200kg. You should be averaging around 30mpg towing.
thanks for both your reply's yes it is a 2 litre diesel the caravan is a 4 birth fixed bed fleetwood colchester 1993 year and does about 28 mpg towing but i thought it would do a little more mpg but thanks again lads
I wasn't aware that Fleetwood or for that matter any other makers made fixed bed caravans back then! 28 mpg isn't that bad tho, for what amounts to towing a brick on wheels behind your car
no thanks opensauce, I prefer to leave things as they came out the factory and kept in the best, original condition possible that way things such as the weights of it don't get altered or the structure of the caravan
It's possible the modification is the cause of the excess weight on the front of caravan as mentioned in op's other thread particulary if an ordinary sprung bed mattress has been used across front of caravan?
