Hi, I'm after recommendations please for a good tow car. We are upgrading from a tent to a caravan in the new year but are aware of towing limitations on our current vehicle and are seriously considering changing our car before we buy a caravan, simply to give us more choice! However there are so many cars on the market we are getting more and more confused what is a good reliable tow car for a reasonable size or weight of a 4 berth caravan. We currently have a 60 plate 1.5 diesel Renault Scenic. So any suggestions would be gratefully received, thank you.

Do you have the b+e driving licence? If not you need to carefully match the weight of tow car and van so the combined plated max weights of car and van do not exceed 3500kg.

Everyone will have their own ideas of which are the best tow cars and caravans, a lot depends on your needs.
Engines with a good torque band are a must, do you need lots of carry load / space in the car, what layout of caravan, are you going to attend rallies or use 5 van sites (mud and wet grass)? with or without EHU?

I have a Skoda Octavia Estate 2.0TDi 4x4 it did pull a Sprite Alpine 4 mtplm 1,230kg with no problems, now it pulls a heavier 2 berth 1,318kg (88% tow ratio), again with no problems and very stable. Estates do have a good load carry capacity and has the space to carry extra for rallies with no EHU, good traction when the going gets wet and muddy. Torque 320nm at 1,750 - 2,500rpm.
It is only a 'guideline' that the caravan mtplm needs to be 85% of the cars kerbweight for safe towing and as said above do you have a B or B+E licence?
Example of my car: GVW 2,095kg, caravan mtplm 1,318kg = 3,413kg, under 3,500kg, so OK for a B licence I do have a B+E.

Great advice above. Here are a few points after 40 years of towing smaller stuff up to 2000k.

4x4: Not essential, but very useful when on grass etc. Yes.

Diesel: Better low end torque. Yes.

CC: A personal thing, but I would go no lower than 2.0.

150bhp +: I have a 2.0, 180 bhp Diesel. Do not let anyone tell you BHP is not important, the old saying goes "Torque let's you do the work (Diesel) Horse Power let's you do the work quicker"

Manual or Auto: Auto every time, no comparison.

Saloon/Estate/SUV: I have an SUV now after years of Estate cars. Would not go back. I see little or no point in a saloon car for caravaning.

Do not go any higher than a 85% match, especially as you are a newbie to caravans.

I hope this helps, but it is purely my opinion, I am sure others will disagree........But I still would not change it!

Good luck, and happy caravaning.

Thank you for the great advice, much appreciated. This caravanning lark is so confusing but research is the way forward both in terms of car choice and caravan choice, I think we have cracked the layout we would like after viewing lots of caravans, so at least its narrowing down a bit!

If you like the Renault, find a 2 ltd diesel version , most will tow up to 1500kg
Your 1.5 should be capable of up to 1300kg at least, check your log book

we now have a bailey 4 berth and tow with a 1.6 diesel and its absoloutly perfect although it does drink the fuel a little more than perhaps a more powerful car would, but of coarse we do benefit from great economy when solo so its all about a balance of your needs. I agree saloon cars are not so practical we have tried that and 4 x 4 off road type vehicles are not necessary for everyone, my advice is before you buy your car find your caravan and note the weights then this will give you a guide for the car to buy. Keep within the limits and as close as possible to 85%.

Very nice looking caravan you have there Octavia 4x4

Sorry Richard, I towed for around 4 years with 1.6 diesel for work before I retired, I would describe it as adequate, but certainly not "absolutely perfect" in fact far from it. Barely adequate in my opinion.

I now tow, last 13 months, with a 2.0 D with 180bhp auto, and it is a far, far nicer experience. I did 2300 miles in France back in September, around 1800 towing about 1350kg, and it was a much nicer believe me.

Most modern 2.0 diesels will give a good return, but you are looking for a tow horse so don't expect 60/40mpg from a good tow car. With regard to 4x4, mine is intelligent 4x4 so puts the drive where it is needed, when it is needed, and I would compare it to an auto box......Once you have had one, you would not go back. I must, however, add I live in rural Devon, so 4x4 is par for the course.

Good luck with your search, but don't go under powered. You will regret it, bigger is better when it comes to towing.

If you like the slightly higher driving position, the Skoda yeti, will tick all the boxes, the 2ltr man diesel, can achieve 60 plus solo and 39 towing

Yes mike 2003 I agree I have towed with a few 2ltr diesel BMW previously which were all excellent, I was pointing out that my 1,6 diesel tows my van perfect however it is very light weight at 1184kg max weight and we don't use it loaded to its max either which is why it works for us. This is the reason my advice to the op was to find the van before the car, we didn't do that and as we had not long got the car we didn't want to change it so we looked for light weight vans only which obviously limited our choice

Weight is the crucial thing.
Best advice is to tow a caravan that isn't heavier (when loaded) than 85% of the car. That's for beginners at towing.
If you have a car of 1600kgs, that will give you 1360kgs for a caravan.
Some cars have a stated maximum towing weight. It is illegal (and probably dangerous) to go over that.
When we started caravanning, we looked at a few cars we liked, found out their weights and went from there - you have to start somewhere.
By the way Google works out percentages very simply. Just type in "what is 85% of x" and it gives you the answer.

When the day come to change our tug, I'm considering a SWB van.....

People seem to overlook 'vans' as everyday 'cars'....

Something like a Vauxhall Vivaro, or Renault Trafic - I know, same van - different badge. Rather them than a Transit though...

Half converted to have seats in the rear and windows in the side door(s).

Good towing capacities seem to come as standard with vans. Higher driving position. And you still get fairly good MPG with them...

Van would be good, but I would definitely not put the Vauxhall/Renault before the Ford Transit, although the VW would be my first choice.

Vans can be a good choice but I think some sites wont allow them so your camping choice may be limited
