Hi all, we are taking our caravan to the Highlands for the first time this coming Aug/Sept. from the North, am I right that best route to Glencoe is the A82 ? Please tell me I won't have my husband in a lather of sweat towing on narrow roads through mountains ! Ha

If you are coming from the N West, ie Carlisle side then the A82 is the way to go, go up the M74 then onto M8 by Glasgow airport and over the Erskine Bridge and onto the A82, if you are on the East side of the "North" you can cross over to the West (A69?) or go to Edinburgh and using the M8 cross over to Glasgow, alternatively go round Edinburgh on the ring road and onto the M9 to Stirling, then A 84 to Callander and join the A85 at Lochearnhead, follow A85 to Crianlarich and join the A82 at the top of Loch Lomomd the A82 is the only road to Glencoe. a place to stop is at Tyndrum just before the road splits for Oban/Fort William.It is a great scenic journey over the moors
Whichever road you go there will be some narrow roads (particularly on parts of the road up Loch Lomond) and some fairly long up hill drags

We have visited that part of Scotland many times and have found the route via Stirling, through Crianlarich and onto the A82 at Tyndrum to be much easier when towing the caravan. We have towed around Loch Lomond, it's just a matter of taking your time, large trucks do the same route.

Last summer I went up the A84(Stirling) and joined the A82 at Tyndrum but came back all along the A82. I'd support the A84/A82 option. The A82 around Loch Lomond is much busier and has more tight bends. It is manageable, as mentioned previously lorries and coaches use it, but it's not a road I'd like to tow on often.

I live just off the A82 and whilst it is a reasonable road, nervous drivers towing caravans should avoid the stretch between Tarbet and Ardlui if at all possible.
Too many Tourist Buses and Large Lorries and too many narrow bridges.
Whilst the roads authorities are trying to make that stretch easier, the area does not land itself to easy road widening.

By the by, the narrow roads in Scotland do not tend to go through the mountains, but more usually around them.

Sorry to be pedantic, but when you said "from the North", I assumed you meant from north of Glencoe.

A wee tip; Scots don't take too kindly to referring to the north of England as the "north"!!

Thank you for all your advice and responses. And, I'm sorry, I should have said exactly where, I didn't think ? ..... we'll be travelling from Liverpool and first stop is Moffat but just for 2 nights, then onto Glencoe.
