As far as I know the VRS models are not Type Approved for towing but there is a lot of discussion on the Briskoda forum that it may be possible to tow up to 800kg.

I presume the max weight (MTPLM) of the caravan is over 800kg so it wouldn't be a suitable vehicle anyway.

Thanks Rob. This is what I suspected. We recently bought the caravan and have towed it a couple of times with our Mercedes B180 Auto sport. When we bought the van we did the research thing and were told that it was 100% OK, but I just want to know for sure. Also, should we rather use the manual gear option on hills, etc?

I don't really understand your reply. If the MTPLM of the caravan is higher than the max tow weight of the car then you can not tow it . Check the weight plate on the car and the V5 to check the towing weights, if there are no towing weights shown then you can not tow anything at all.

If it was a caravan dealer that told you that the Skoda was ok for towing then I would take that with a pinch of salt because a salesman will tell you anything to get a sale.

Presumably the caravan is within the towing limits of the Merc so I would use that.

I don't think the car is Type Approved for towing, therefore if you were stopped you risk a large fine, and the possible disposal of both the car and caravan.
It is not worth the risk.

At the bottom of the driver's B post is a plate with all the relevant towing capacities.

The reality is the op would probably get away with it as far as enforcement authorities are concerned. When did you last get pulled when towing your caravan? Never? Thought so.

Should the op use the car to tow their caravan then they would have more to fear from insurance assessor after an accident than any police officer who may attend the accident.

However the op has their solution. They can use their Merc which with a 1200kg tow weight will make a competant towcar for their caravan.

I can't really see why the op would want to tow caravan with Skoda if they have the Merc. I agree with Lani that the Skoda Fabia should be taken away for crushing but not because it is towing a caravan when unapproved for towing but because it is offensive to the eye...

The reason will be this is the sports model, and it will leave most other vehicles standing at the lights, the suspension will be lowered so adding any extra weight to it at the back will cause it to bottom out

I am sorry I was a bit vague - the reason we are thinking about something other than the Merc to tow our van is because, although the Merc does meet all the legal requirements regarding MTPLM, etc, it is diesel and we are worried that diesel cars are going to become a thing of the past in the not too distant future.

how can something that you have already got become deleted? and until they invent some sort of fuel to power artics around then so will diesel for cars still be around! don't fall for all the hype! it wasn't that long ago that diesel cars where the next best thing going, then they dropped a big one on the tax revenue and now all of a sudden those that drive them have been outlawed! it wont be long before the tide will change again

If there are no diesel vehicles around , how will things get delivered,
The reason why new diesels will get hit harder is the government is loosing millions in revenues, because diesels can achieve up to 50 % more MPG and the government is loosing out due to the high numbers , just keep running your Merc for as long as you can, , BTW most of them can and do well over a million miles if looked after

There was a thread about diesel vehicles recently on here. There is no real alternative to the diesel engine yet, so I can't see diesel vehicles disappearing anytime soon. Maybe in 20 years time, IF an alternative has been found by then. To the best of my knowledge, nobody is even working on it. Just think of all the things that are powered by diesel engines. When you do, you will surprise yourself.

i know someone with a folding camper who tows it with a Skoda Fabia VRS. he doesnt rate it though, i think that even with a folding camper its kerb weight is on the low side. interesting its not type approved, i have heard that the new minis are not.

i also thought the Fabia VRS, was a turbo diesel.

if you dont already own it then choose something else?

i guess if you do tow with it, you will not get your collar felt but if you have an accident your insurance will be invalid. which in the case of a 3rd party injury claim you dont want to even think about.
