I've just started looking into tow bars for our Ford Focus Estate and according to Towbar Express a swan neck tow bar is 'unlikely to trigger parking sensors' Since our last tow bar did (don't know what kind) and drove us mad, does anyone have experience of these, or can you recommend one that doesn't set off the parking sensors? There is a detachable one, which would be ideal, but it's about £100 more!
Any advice appreciated.
Its usually the electrical socket that triggers the sensors not the towball itself.
Or accessories bolted to the towball like stabiliser brackets.
Have the electrical socket mounted slightly under the bracket or tucked in, i have mine facing sideways slightly and no issues with a flanged towball and even a bumper protection plate.
Detachable, swan neck or fixed flange towballs will not trigger the reversing sensors as Grampian91 has confirmed. All towbars require an electrical socket which is not central the same as the towball so it's the incorrect positioning of the socket will most likely have been the underlying fault which you previously experienced. I once had a Vauxhall Zafira on an 04 plate and was told that a detachable towbar was the only choice when rear parking sensors were installed which cost £150 more but after my next purchase which was a Ford Focus estate I was told by an alternative towbar company that a fixed flange towbar was okay. It was this towbar company that advised that it was where the socket was mounted is the most important feature and not the type of towbar and towball mounting.
I have reversing sensors on my Volvo but have a fixed flange towbar with a stainless steel bumper plate and no problems with detection of the sensors.
I have a detachable towbar on a mondeo estate. If I leave the towbar on I am fine as long as the cover for the towball is on straight. If it gets knocked and is no longer symmetrical then the parking sensors are useless and it beeps like mad.
Thank you so much for your replies, I hadn't even thought it could be the electrical socket. That makes me much happier with what to choose, and I'll definitely make sure the electric socket isn't in the way.

I have a fixed swan neck towbar and the same thing happens to me, I think the sonic beam interacts in some way with the cavity in the cover. We have the Alko golf ball type and as alex says as long as its level its absolutely fine.
