Thanks everyone for all the help and information.

Looks like I will have to find a dealer or garage that's able to do the recoding before I can tow, and if I can't manage that by next weekend I'll have to find another vehicle to use.

Thanks again,
Anthony

You don't state where you are, but I know that NorthWest Towbars will recode for you.

You may also find that someone with the VCDS system will do it for you, for beer tokens. Try looking on one of the VW forums for people who have it.

I'm in SW London. The reason for the tow bar is to collect a caravan from NE Wales, very close to Liverpool in fact.

I could take a detour to them if necessary. I'm also going to research other firms I might be able to visit on my way up, such as in and around Birmingham.

It's got to be worth asking, thanks for the tip.

I have heard of NO garage that has refused to recode a car that has been self-fitted with the correct wiring kit.

i was going to to fit a wiring kit to a vw golf and asked local dealer to code in. told me they would not touch it, they wanted to do complete job or not at all, when i told them i was a trained mechanic and was not paying for them to do what i could do. i have always fitted by-pass relays and never had an issue,

My son in law is at VW dealers and my son at Ford dealers and they code them regularly whether fitted in garage or not.

I called the local VW dealer this morning and they told me the same thing.

However, I have now been in touch with a mobile tow bar fitter and he's happy to recode the car after I've fitted the kit. So it looks like I should be ok for this weekend!

So ONE dealer refused to do it, not all dealers!
