Can anyone help? We have decided after spending over £3000 on our 2007 mondeo 2litre that we have had enough we have virtually had everything replaced and still things keep going wrong. We are looking at
2011 (11) Vauxhall Insignia 2.0 CDTi Exclusiv 4dr and would like some advice on what they are like to tow with our caravan is only a light one max fully loaded is 1200. Any advice would be much appreciated we are on a tight budget so can't go above £5000 and don't want loads of miles on clock so we are limited with what type of car to get. Thanks all

Have you driven the Insignia? Its rubbish compared to a Mondeo. The seats were like sitting on a hardwood chopping board.

If you do go for one you want the later revised engines from 2013 onwards. The older units are not very good.

Although you say the Mondeo has been a money pit you do get a lot of car for the money. Buy wisely and be really picky and you can get a cracker.

Im on my 5th. None of them have needed anything expensive. Although my current one may need a clutch if i plan on keeping it for a few years.

I would not go from Mondeo to Insignia, the Mondeo is a great car it is just a shame you have had problems with yours, 1000s haven't!

As previously said, look at the Skoda Octavia or Superb, you will not find a better car.

I do not have one by the way, I like cars and reading car magazines and reviews.

Good luck.

may be worth adding a bit to your budget to get the right car.

We just got a Skoda Yeti after first looking at the Octavia. We also spent about 3.5 K more than we wanted but got a 3 year old motor rather than a 6 year old one. As most cars loose about 1K a year after the initial nose dive I reckon we did ok. Have to say its soooooooo much better than the i30 its replacing and the Octavia was just a bit big on the outside for what we need. There are plenty of them about with reasonable mileage esp if you can live with the S spec.

ours was for the good lady and she wanted an SE so guess what we got...lol Ours is an ex mobility car and is very well looked after as most are.

100K miles on an octavia is nothing , they are not even run in so you can expect around 300K from them as long as you change the oil, the 1.9 TDI is the best, if you buy one from a dealer make sure the belt and tensioner is changed, along with the clutch if its rattling on idle

Thanks all but we are on a tight budget of £5000 as my mom and dad are lending us the money we live near stourbridge and have not found any skoda cars anywhere near us in our price range so that car is out I'm afraid as we need to change our crappy mondeo as soon as possible. I understand that a lot of people say Mondeo is the best but we have been burnt really badly with ours it cost us £4000 4 years ago and we have spent over £3000 on it so we could have got a better car then. We had to have injectors replaced as soon as warranty ran out then the turbo and loads of other engine problems so won't risk another one.

For £5k any car you buy could be a money pit. If you have spent that much on your Mondy you must have fixed most of it so I would stick with it for a couple of years. As a trade in it is worth very little so keeping it another 2 yrs won't lose you much more & you can save some more money.

If you want something for £5k look ony at service history should be from main dealer & average mileage 10k pa. The make does not much matter. Certainly don't reject Mondeo out of hand. Just find the best car you can that can tow your caravan.

Thank you but we really don't want to keep mondeo as it won't get through mot this time we have a big oil leak that our mechanic says not to mess with as it will be mega money again but because of the leak the black smoke coming out of back is awful so it will fail on emisions. You would think £5000 would buy a decent car but obviously not in this day and age.

Hi
No good saying pick wise.
If you had 20k in your back pocket cash, you could still end up with a pig.
Look at service history etc and you should be ok.

Even brand new.
Couple of friends bought a range rover each. same model, reg on same day.
One was never out the garage, and one only seen the garage each year for service and mot?

Problem is that you have a 1200kg caravan so you need a fairly large car to tow it. Larger cars tend to have higher mileages & cost more to fix.

It is fairly good advice to go for a Skoda, VW or Audi with the 1.9 tdi diesel. These engines do run for high mileages but of course they do go wrong & anything that goes wrong with a modern diesel costs plenty to fix.

A search of Autotrader brings up plenty of Skodas & not all with mega mileages. You need one with a full main dealer service history that shows all new parts that have been fitted.

For your budget you need to be looking at cars which have the greatest depreciation from new to get the newest/lowest mileage car possible. The Insignia is the obvious choice as there are plenty available with relatively low mileages and this will tow your caravan easily. You might also consider French cars such as the Renault Laguna, Citroen C5 and Peugeot 407 or 508. A less obvious choice might be a Mitsubishi Lancer Di. There are several low mileage examples for around £5k and most of these will have been privately owned with a full service history. They also have an excellent reliability record.

As stated above, a full service history is essential, as this will verify both maintenance and mileage.

Thanks Humberwolf for the advice I will look at those too. We have found a lovely insignia which has only done 70,000 miles on an 11 plate and only had one owner with full service history for £4700 but have been unable to find any advice on what they are like to tow with our caravan is only light 1100 fully loaded so I would think it will be ok.

Late mk2 Honda crv?

Or Skoda octavia/ yeti certainly beat suggested so far.

Imo is rather buy a better quality car with slightly older with more miles than a cheap newer car.
