Hello,

I have a 2014 Ford Focus Ecoboost 1.0 with a mass in service of 1329kg.

The registration certificate says I can only pull braked 1000 and unbraked 635. But these are both less than the 85% 'rule'.

My questions are, and please consider this is my first post and I am a novice at this, what would you calculate as my tow limit and in your experience could I pull a lightweight 4 berth?

Many thanks,

Tom

Your tow limit is 1000 kg as stated by the manufacturer, you must not exceed this. Check the weight plate on the car to make sure that you can tow 1000 kg when the car is fully loaded.

You can tow a lightweight 4 berth but it must have an MTPLM of 1000 kg or less. You are probably looking at a caravan from the early 1990's as more recent caravans are heavier. There is another thread running on this forum about lightweight caravans, there are plenty for sale on a low budget but you may have to travel a few miles to find the right one.

The braked towing limit for that car is as you say 1000kg. 85% or less is a guide for safe towing it's not a law or even a rule. The max tow limit for a specific car model is set due to engine bhp & torque. It is a technical figure based on car ability to move the on an 8% incline usually. If yours says 1000kg then that cannot be exceeded & you need to find a caravan with a fully laden weight of 1000kg or less. You should find an older 1990s caravan of less than that weight.

I don't think that car/engine combination could pull the skin off a rice pudding

Other than rice puddings, do you think I could pull a lightweight four berth. Looking at ones around 800kgs?

Is that 800 kg MTPLM or 800 MRO? Yes you can tow a caravan with MTPLM of 1000 kg or less as already mentioned above.

800 MRO, 1100 MTPLM, but we are not planning on filling the van with much.

The weight limits will be set around Ford's standards for gradeability (pulling away on hills), powertrain cooling and clutch longevity. Part of the reason for powertrain downsizing is to be able to downsize everything else, sometimes called the "virtuous circle" — a lighter, more efficient engine can have lighter, smaller cooling pack, less heavy duty suspension, smaller fuel tank; the resultant lighter car can have smaller, lighter, cheaper brakes and so on.

But absolute capability suffers as a result, and towing limits are collateral damage.

If you must drive a car that small, you could consider a folding camper. Our Conway Cruiser has a MTPLM of 900kg. The smallest car I've towed it with was a 170PS / 400Nm Merc E-Class estate with a 2.1 diesel which had no problems whatsoever although I could "feel" the weight behind; at 250PS / 600Nm in a 3.0 V6 diesel Discovery it is virtually unnoticable.

Although power is what you need to do work, it's torque that's important when towing: this gives an indication of "grunt" — the ability to lug a load along without having the engine screaming. Your engine, whilst impressive figures for a 1.0 I3 petrol, is only 170Nm peak. In your place, if you're planning to do much towing, I'd look at swapping the car for a diesel (in the Focus range, 1.5 TDCi is 250–270Nm; 2.0 TDCi is 370–400Nm) or at a minimum, a higher-output petrol (current 1.5 EcoBoost is 240Nm).

Summary: towing any form of portable dwelling bigger than a trailer tent with your current car will be a miserable experience.

Thanks for that.

So, I could pull it but potentially it could be sluggish?

It would struggle on hills. If you are ok with slowing down to 35mph on motorway inclines with trucks coming past you quite slowly if they are loaded as well then go for it.

With an underpowered towcar you are driving a laden truck. up & down the gearbox & slowing right down on hills. So you have to drive like a truck driver & be oblivious to the queue of traffic behind you.

123 bhp & 125 lb/ft (147 lb/ft on overboost) isn`t an insignificant amount, and twenty years ago would make a decent towcar.

My 1996 Peugeot 406 diesel happily towed a four-berth Lunar to the Scottish Highlands with 89 bhp and 148 lb/ft, and never dropped below 50mph even up Beattock and Shap, so the OP shouldn`t take some of the scare stories too seriously.

We have all got used to big power outputs, people were towing with much less than 100 bhp with the lighter vans that were available with no problems. Match the car and the van and enjoy the freedom!

I pretty much already drive like a truck driver, so that aspect will be fine.

I am also just getting a 1990's lightweight 4 berth. I inputted the info to tow car info and it describes the car and van as a perfect match; Does the below look managable and is the website trustworthy?

I very much value your opinions.

hi I had a 1.6 petrol focus and a tiny two berth caravan and I struggled on even a slight incline I would be surprised if you could tow any van with a 1.0 focus. I changed to a 2.0tdi focus estate massive difference now got a skoda yeti again 2.o tdi.

The 1/20 hills says it all really. 3rd gear on the motorway.

Shows your top speed as 75mph in 3rd gear!

Power at 60mph a single star.
Percentage of throttle in 5th gear 92%, your foot is almost on the floor in 5th unless going downhill.
In 4th your 73 - 83% throttle also so your going to be pushing it hard to tow.
My diesel scores 5 stars and only 53% - 60% throttle in 5th at 60mph. In 4th its below 46%.

Power needed at 60mph 1670 N for my car and in 4th i have over 2200 N, just short at 1583 N in 5th. Yours shows 1627 N and doesnt even get half even in 4th gear.

The perfect match is just based on weight not the actual pulling power or how it will cope on the hills.

Your max hill start is 11.8% - 15.6% where mine is 27.5% - 30.2%.

I have towed with the a 2L petrol (143bhp) and 2L diesel (130bhp) of the same model car and the diesel towed so much better i swapped it.

With the petrol motorway slopes requires gearchanges but the diesel just pulled and pulled. The petrol averaged 23 - 26mpg where the diesel average mid 30's and a high of 39mpg just towing.

You need to look at a plate on the car probably on the drivers door pillar. It will show the max loaded weight allowed for the car and a higher figure which is the Gross Train Weight allowed.

The GWT is the maximum combined weight the car and caravan can be when actually loaded and this must not be exceeded.

You may find if you subtract the car max weight from the GWT that you cannot tow 1000kg when the car is loaded up to max weight.
