No. Your only removing paint from the ball itself.
The paint will contaminate the pads on your stabiliser.
Grease and rust from the ball will do the same, hence carrying a green scourer pad.
As grampian says, but also it wouldn,t do any harm to clean the ball with methylated spirit each time before hitching.
