I tow with a Land Rover 110 V8 3.5 petrol and average 13mpg. Thinking of adding a 4.4L or 5.0L Range Rover to our 'fleet' of cars. Doubt that the mpg will improve much but the journey should be quicker!
I tow with a Volvo v50 2.5 auto estate. No problems. Just over 20mpg.
Gear box is switchable so can switch to gears if needed.Latest van is a little Abbey Iona so I don't know it's on the back!
We tow with a Shogun LWB 3.2 diesel. 1800kg Adria Thames van that's 2.5m wide. We get between 16 - 18 mpg fully loaded with the van. Very stable towing, just thirsty. Been over the Alps and back no worries😀.

No one's saying what 'weights' they're towing with their petrol tugs....?
Just with all this hoo hah over diesels...
Is it possible to still tow a decent sized (heavier) van with a petrol...?
I would say that it was perfectly possible, as I used to tow some very heavy trailer loads with my Mk2 Cortina. Often considerably heavier than the car. However, fuel consumption will be very much worse than with a comparable diesel.
