Hiya, We have just bought an old caravan, a 1990 swift Eccles amythist, can't do camping any longer 🙂 Anyhow we have an x trail, now the pins on towing connection has flummoxed us. The x trail has 13 or 7 pins ( can't check hubby has the car atm) well the caravan has 2 connectors but one is a horizontal 3 pin what kind if adapter do we neee to connect it to a 13 or 7 pin drag bar? Ive looked everywhere & haven't come across anything like it. I've tried to add photos to explain what I mean but it won't upload anything & also not up to speed in any technical jargon as yet. Thank you

Caravan should have 2 leads one black & one grey each with a 7 pin plug. If it has not got them then wiring is non standard or a bodge. First establish if your car has a 13pin socket or the older twin 7 pin sockets for caravan use.

If 7 pins on car then get 2 new 7pin plugs one black & one grey on caravan cables job done. If car has 13pin socket then you have a choice. You can fit a 13pin plug to black & grey cables together or do job properly & fit new 13pin plug & cable right back to junction box inside front of caravan. Or you can use an adaptor which is cumbersome & poor choice imo.

If you are capable of doing this yourself then google '13pin caravan wiring' & also 12n/12s caravan wiring. If you understand electrical wiring these will give you diagrams containing all you need to know to suitably retire caravan. Otherwise any mobile caravan fitter can do the job. I would guess caravan needs a full service anyway, yes?

Be aware that the 12S plug wiring changed in 1998. The caravan my be the earlier wiring or may have been changed to suit the new standard.

Not a huge change but you need to be aware of it and make sure car and caravan are wired to a compatible standard whether that be pre 1998 or after.

If you only have one 7 pin black socket on the car you will need to get the grey suppllementary socket fitted.
The grey provides fridge ,battery charge and Ithink reverse light supply.

It's not essential to have the grey socket fitted if all you want to do is to tow the caravan. Probably obvious...
