Hi, All
Can anyone please help we have Grand Scenic expr-n dci 106 (1481cc) 2010 vehicle and are looking at getting cheep caravan to take 2 adults 4 young children away.
Question what is the recommended weight for a caravan I am struggling with all the figures especially the Renault issue
Plate on car shows
MAx permissible 2118 kg
Total train weight 3418 kg
Front axle 1100 kg
Rear axle 1220kg
We have just recently got the car so a change is not on the cards.
The max trailer weight is 1300 kg. Total train weight 3418 minus total car weight 2118 equals max trailer weight of 1300kg.
As a recommendation you should aim for a caravan with a max weight of around 85% of the kerbweight of your car. Your kerbweight is probably around 1425 kg so a 1300 kg caravan would give you a 91% match. The kerbweight should be on the V5 or in the handbook.
Have a look at 6 berth caravans on ebay or autotrader to get an idea of what is available within your budget and weight limits but beware of sellers that give the empty weight(MIRO) of the caravan. You need to know the max weight (MTPLM) to match the caravan to the car.
Revenue weight means gross vehicle weight, 1300 kg is the max weight for a braked trailer. As I mentioned above you can tow 1300 kg max but bear in mind that your car is not very powerful and a fully loaded car towing a caravan at max weight may well struggle on the hills. I would try it but I expect you will find it hard work and want to change the car as soon as you can.

PS Kerb weight may be shown on the V5 as mass in service.
Mass in Running Order weight: 910 kgs or 17.9126806031 cwt / hundred weight
Maximum allowable weight is: 1150 kgs or 22.6369040589 cwt / hundred weight
The kerbweight of the towing car needs to be at least 1352.94117647kgs to achive an 85% match, to achive a 95% match the tow car would need to be at least 1210.52631579 kgs. A tow car weighing less than 1150 kgs is very likely to be illegal and likely to result in a prosecution if you were stopped by the Police as well as invalidating any insurance for your car and caravan.
Weight wise that sounds very good, well within your 1300 kg limit and you would still have a decent payload available.
I've just had a quick Google of that caravan and it looks like they were available as 4 or 5 berth so you would need to ask the seller to demonstrate all 5 beds. Some sellers are very imaginative in their descriptions and invent beds that don't exist. I found a 2004 that was a 4 berth and a 2005 that was 5 berth so be sure to check the beds out.
At £2000 that sounds very cheap to me, possibly too cheap. I would get it checked by a caravan technician before handing over any money. Has it been serviced? Is it CRIS registered? How old are the tyres?
