Hi LlaniDavis, I'm looking at the right vehicles that meet my needs which are not necessarily the same vehicles that would meet your needs.

Due to disability we need an automatic gearbox and enough room to carry a mobility scooter. We also need four wheel drive to keep mobile during the weather. Whatever we drive is always going to be a compromise, I would love a Yeti but unfortunately it is too small to carry all our kit.

Rob

Skoda Octavia or superb 4x4 estate, both have more than enough room for a mobility scooter, with the back seats up or down, and they come as automatic as well

Assuming you mean mpg, it's not a question of competency on the part of the manufacturer.

They have to quote a fuel consumption figure under standardized conditions. In the old days of simple, naturally-aspirated petrols, the system worked fairly well and provided a reasonable expectation of what a customer might achieve when driving gently.

Nowadays, forced-induction high-output diesels can provide amazing economy or amazing performance, but not at the same time. The tests tend to operate the engine in the economy areas of its performance to an extent that a real-world customer will never achieve.

In the next few years, the industry will transition to a new testing regime: WLTP. This should provide a better indication of expected real-world economy, but it's still largely down to driving style.

My 2017MY Kuga 2.0 diesel AWD has 6500 miles on the clock and is showing a long-time average of 42.9mpg on the computer, although only 20 miles of that was towing an FC. I don't hang around when driving, using the performance of the car when safe but stick to the limits and anticipate well ahead to minimize the need for braking.

my 64 plate rav 4 awd 2.2 auto averages 28-31mpg when towing out 4 birth bailey, but only 34mpg solo.
however the boot space is excellent with enough room for 6 foot people on the back seat to do the cancan even with 6 foot people in the front.

Troon makes a good point. Driving style can make a huge difference to fuel consumption.
My Nissan NV200 is obviously NOT a 4 x 4 and has nowhere near the towing capacity compared to a large tow vehicle.
Getting to the point though, driven really thoughtfully , solo we can achieve a genuine 60 mpg but that's boring to do once the novelty wears off Driving sensibly it drops to 53mpg but driving to make good progress as old Police drivers would say, drops consumption to 43 mpg. That is a huge variation in fuel use.The same applies with any vehicle.
Recently got driven in a Chevy Caravan Auto in America with 285bhp V6. the driver constantly used kickdown for fun , then braked. It ate fuel, obviously.

That's a very good point, coming home from our last trip I out dragged a solo honda jazz up a hill from a set of traffic lights purely because I've yet to be behind one that can actually travel at the speed limit (and because my neighbour has one and I really dont like her) HOWEVER my mpg was mid teens for that bit :/

We used to get around 40 solo with our Kuga, commuting. On a long run around 47-50 ish. Towing the heavy twin axle which we had at the time, anything from 29-32, depending on conditions, terrain etc. That was the 2.0 diesel awd manual, 180 bhp. For a car of that size with that bhp, we had no complaints. We have an Edge now, same engine and bhp, I'm getting about 34 commuting, but I only do very short journeys. Towing our small single axle we got around 32 I think it was on an 80 mile motorway trip this last weekend.

Just got rid of our 2011   2.0d Kuga 163bhp. It was a great tow car. It would return around 25mph to 32 mph towing depending on weather and terrain condition. Value for money and compared with the opposition it was hard to fault. Solo general urban driving could be any where from 35 mph to low 40's. Best I ever got on a run 48 mph.....but I can't drive like very often!! Swapped it for a BMW 2.0d auto as I thought a bit of quality would be nice. Nice car, beautifully smooth 8 speed auto box similar consumption to the Kuga but in all honesty the Kuga was noticeably more stable towing our Coachman VIP than the BMW is. I would caution anyone these days when buying a vehicle for towing. Make sure that the tow bar electrics you have ordered ( or are already fitted to the car you are buying) have the full 13 pin wiring fitted. It is quite common for only the basic electrics to be wired. In the case of a BMW may cost a lot of money to sort it.

Not quite sure why you thought a BMW would get you a bit of quality Lansdorf. They are no better than any other average brand, that is just my opinion of course, but I have never been a fan of BMW after driving my mates car. Very, very average. There is no similar priced BMW I would swap for my Kuga.

Well Mike 3003 you live and learn. I've had several Beemers in the past and just thought I have another for my 70th birthday. Wisdom does not necessarily come with age!! A couple of years and I'll most likely be back with another Kuga. Assuming that I am spare.

I'm happy with fuel consumption on my Kuga (2010 163bhp AWD) both towing and solo but does anyone else have problems with the DPF sensor, mine went while towing to Skirlington last Aug, AA came out & tried to do a regen then found the sensor was at fault, took this to local ford dealer & had it replaced at a cost of £175 ( £100 of this was diagnostic even though they had the readout from AA !!!) Driving locally last week engine malfunction warning came on, called out AA thinking it was a regen required, faulty DPF Sensor found again luckily ford replaced under warranty. Now thinking about removing DPFsensor & having it remapped anyone had this done
Thanks in advance
Graham

Gray871, I had exactly the same problem with my Kuga 163. 2011 with 47k. Towing through Snowdonia, the dash light came on and the car went into "limp home mode". We were recovered and taken to our destination campsite at Porthmadoc. The local Ford dealer did regen for us and it was fine all week but the light came on a couple of times on the way home. Turned out we had an intermittent fault on the sensor. Similar costs to yours. Not sure about removing the sensor. I know a few who have removed the Cat Converter!! Very naughty.

I'd say it was expensive compared to my ASX4. - When you take the Titanium and add just some of the extras standard on the ASX it comes out at over £6k more, and only 3 years warranty at that. With my last ASX I got 65% in part ex after 3 years, and fuel consumption is as good as any equivalent vehicle.

Yes, but it is a poor drive, cheap interior and shoddy build quality, and why does it not have simple things like height adjustable passengers seat........That is why it is cheaper. My wife and I had a ASX for a day 18 months ago and was glad to hand it back. No wonder the salesman was really pushy.

The only decent Mitsubishi I have driven is the L200........I love pick up trucks. ❤️

I would have a serious look at the Skoda Kodiak if I was buying a new SUV now.
