If you can tell us the weights of the car and caravan we can work it out for you. The car weights will be on the V5 and the weight plate on the car, the caravan weights will be on the plate by the door. There are so many different models of car and caravan that it is impossible to guess what your figures are so come back with the details and we can work it out for you.
I have a 2013 Focus Mk3 1.6 TDCI Econetic and whilest it's very economical it's no ball of fire and I certainly wouldn't like to tow much with it. I'm used to towing with a 2 litre Mondeo diesel and that does tow well.
I have the older 2010 Ford Focus 1.6tdci and tow between 1,100 and 1,200kg which comes in around 82%.
Ford do say the maximum "technically permissable" tow weight is 1,300kg.
With the van loaded correctly it is an excellent combination to tow with.
Personally I would not like to try a hillstart with 1,300 kg on the back from my own experience.
------------- It is a wise man who has something to say.
It is a fool who has to say something.
I have a 2010 ford focus estate 1.6 diesel and currently tow a lunar quasar 462, mtplm 1205 but uprated to 1295. Max tow is 1300kg.
It has always struggled to reverse the van, and the previous one (mtplm 1100kg), and I got stuck with it on a slight grassy but wet slope on a site in September and had to unhitch and use the mover.
I was towing at 85% before it was uprated and only had it uprated as I couldn't get everything I wanted in the van (about 15kg short) so it probably weighs about 1220. Towing on roads its pretty good but I'm just about to change it for a CRV as I don't want to get stuck again. I think I'd have got stuck with the lighter van too. I've ended up with a very hot clutch when i've tried to reverse it on grass and so don't try now - I use the mover.
I have managed to hill start with it from traffic lights but it needs significant effort on the revs and I feel for the clutch!
The MTPLM from the plate on the side of the caravan should be less than the mass in service on the car’s V5 document. That would give 100% ratio. Ideally the caravan MPTLM should be less than 85% of the car's mass in service. Be careful of using either clubs outfit matching service. The data they held for my Ford Focus was wrong. I found my 1.8 diesel an excellent tow car.
