I've never had a manual car for years
Looking to upgrade to a caravan from canvas
Checked the Kia 4wd towing information for sorento
Manual up to 2.5k auto 2k kg
Why would auto take off 500kg ?
Sorry if it's a stupid question - van newbee
Potentially , be nice I might buy your van ;/)

There are lots of reasons how a manufacturer arrives at a towing weight for a particular car. However, in your scenario, the most likely reason is the ability of the auto gearbox to cope with a certain weight/strain.

I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure!

As above lots of reasons.
Maybe the auto cannot do a hill start towing more than its rated limit. Or maybe the gearbox oil overheats and cooks itself?
Maybe the gearbox isnt strong enough to tow a higher limit?
If you look there will be the opposite case where an auto can tow more than a manual, because in that car the manual box is a weaker design.

Thanks, that's a relief
Van search will start later this year but good to know I won't have to switch to a manual car

I couldn't agree more! I would never dream of towing with a manual, too much like hard work! Auto is much smoother too.

And you wouldn't want or need to tow to the maximum weight for most caravans.

And you wouldn't want or need to tow to the maximum weight for most caravans.
Take into account that the standard recommendation is that the weight of the caravan should not be more than 85% of the towcar's kerbweight.
A quick Google suggests the Sorrento's kerbweight is around 1950kg so any limitation imposed by the gearbox just doesn't really matter.
Go to
http://www.towcar.info/outfitmatch.php
& see what weight of van you should consider towing.
