Hi
Our car has
Gross vehicle weight 1780
Gross train weight 2280

Can we pull a caravan with MTPLM 1300kg

We are new to this and I am so confused!



update - I have spoken to the dealer and it is as I feared from reading other threads, we have dropped a huge one...thanks all for reading but no replies required

The higher figure will be the gross vehicle weight which is max allowed fully laden weight of vehicle. Gross train weight would be higher than that it is max weight of car & trailer together.

Not necessarily, if it is just a smaller car or one of the lightweights not meant for towing then it shows it can only tow 500kg when the car is fully loaded.

If these figures are taken from the weight plate details on the car then they don't show the kerbweight (sometimes on the V5) which would be less than the 1780kg.

If that is the case then the car will certainly not tow the caravan. If the op wants further help rather than speculation fron the scant info provided then they need to at least post full details of car. Make model & engine type & size.

Perhaps First Thought:-

Gross Train Weight, Minus Gross Vehicle Weight = Weight of Caravan?

But this can explain further:-

MTPLM
There are four main figures to consider when matching a car to a caravan: the car's kerbweight, the car's towing limit, the car's Gross Train Weight (GTW) and the caravan's Maximum Technically Permissable Laden Mass (MTPLM).

Surely if the gross train weight (weight of car + trailer) is only 2280, then the car is only capable of towing a small trailer? If the weight of the car is 1780 that only leaves 500kg maximum trailer weight.

Not really. Sometimes it is helpful to others to clarify matters. Although the OP said that they had "dropped a huge one", they didn't actually say what. The following posters just made it clear to others who maybe reading the thread what the situation was.
