You need two pieces of plywood then about half inch thick, clamp them together then cut and file them to the shape of the bumper contour which can be done again by the use of cardboard. Split them then stick the two pieces of wood at either end of the cardboard to create the exact shape you need. This will produce a pattern of the bumper so the task still can be done with the right skills and imagination to achieve the results. I'm a patternmaker by trade and quite often use my skills to make things like this but some DIY jobs are far beyong the basics that some people are capable of. If you follow my advice you can make the perfect job.

I was thinking that would take me 5x as long as taking the bumper off and doing it by trial and error.
Wood and me are not great friends. I tried making a lathe dog out of wood to use for a casting pattern. It was not pretty
Been having another look at this, it seems for my style of bumper and the profiles of both the hatch and bumper being slightly different, they will never ft together perfectly, I'm think of adding a thin shim on either side of the cut out on the shorter lengths so that I can bulk the hatch closer.
Does no-one had this type of towbar fitted? Surely someone is out there who could post a photo maybe post a couple of measurements as reference
