Not a fan of detachable towbars, some are finicky when it comes to fitting/removal.
You must fit it this exact amount and then whilst standing on your head....
I think your idea of lubricating it the way to go. A small amount of dirt or corrosion can cause problems.
A good spray with WD40 or Plusgas etc. Give it a little wiggle and try again. If it doesn't work. Just spray it again and try later.
