HI   Ive changed my car from a Volkswagen touran 2.0 TDI to a Vauxhall astra 1.9 TDI Ive never towed with the astra yet! but its not as powerful as the touran but as a sports button which makes it pull better! Thing is when im towing my caravan do I leave it in sports all the time or will this damage the engine with the extra load? Hope this makes sense to you. any other people towed with a astra?

The only way you will over stress the drive train is by driving it too hard yourself. The sport button on the diesel just makes the throttle slightly more responsive. If you don't want excess wear while towing then drive it gently through the gears & change down early uphill.

The best way to look at it is comparing a race horse to a Shire horse. Shire horses can pull much more heavier weights than a race horse can but try and get a Shire horse to compete in race needs no explanation. Therefore, the answer to your question is whether you want pulling power or speed which is quite an easy decision to make.

The sport button will give better pulling power & if the driver uses that extra power while towing then it will put more stress on the drive train. The simple answer is that it makes no difference whether the sport button is used or not. It is the driver that makes the difference.

On the Astra, I'm pretty sure the sport button simply alters the throttle map ie just makes the throttle a bit more responsive.

In other words, it just makes the car feel a bit more lively, it does not increase the power just makes it feel that way.

Different cars have different systems, but AFAIK it's perfectly OK to drive in Sport mode all the time.

On my car, the sport mode alters the gearbox and throttle map ie it holds onto the gear longer (it's an Auto) It also lowers the suspension and stiffens the steering response.

Thye sport button just changes the throttle movement.

Instead of having to push the pedal 75% of the way to get 75% of the power, you will only need to push it 50% to get 75% of thge power.
Making it seem a little more responsive.

Foot to the floor acceleration times will be no different though. No extra power is produced just less throttle travel.

I tried it on a Honda recently, Drive along at 30mph in 4th and hit the sport button the revs went up without having to move the throttle pedal.

Disable the sport button and the revs dropped back down.

I towed with the astra a couple of weeks ago now! And the sports button didn't make any difference! But I was impressed with the astra (estate) My caravan is only a 2 berth but the car towed it really well!

Exactly, my astra sport button also stiffened up the suspension as well as the above, which essentially meant I could REALLY chuck it into a corner rather than just drive around it. It didnt give it more grunt to tow with
