Hi everyone, I need advice!!

Our current setup is a jeep cherokee towing a trailer (handbuilt so no off the shelf accessories available) wuth roof box on top plus a couple of bike racks up there too - its a bit of a squash!!!

We've just bought a 2011 Touareg (keeping the jeep though) and intend to tow the trailer with that too so need a towbar...

I also now need to be able to carry 4 bikes as well as having the roofbox on top.

A towbar bike carrier would be good, but can't do that if we're towing the trailer. Can't get the bikes on the roof if we've got the roofbox on...

I wondered about adding roofrails to the trailer to put the bikes/roofbox on there? There are no obvious places to fasten it to the trailer though so I wondered if anyone could suggest anything??

I know its vague but its hard to put into words - I've typed this 3 times so far!!

Thanks in advance!!

You will probably find that towbar mounted bike carriers are not suitable when towing a trailer, as the short drawbar may cause the bikes to foul on the trailer.

A possible solution is to use a high mount rack attached to the tailgate to carry two bikes, but check that it is high enough for bikes to clear the trailer on tight turns. You could then carry two more bikes on the back of your trailer by using a towbar mounted rack, bolted to a cross member or the frame. Alternatively bolt a towball to a cross member on the trailer and use a towball mounted bike rack which can be removed when not needed. Either method would enable you to load and unload your trailer without having to remove your bikes.

If the trailer is handbuilt it may have a longer drawbar, I know mine did when I owned one.

Thanks guys, the maxrax is an interesting option. Am I right in thinking though that the towbar has to be permenantly attached to the car? Would have liked a removable towbar on the Touareg like we have on the Jeep - plus it'd be good to be able to use the same carrier on both vehicles....

Don't want much do I???!!!!

I even wondered about somehow getting roofbars on the trailer. It's frame is made of steel box tubing, so attaching some feet to it might be possible, but I have no idea where to look for such things - tried Towsure but they had nothing that I could see....

Cheers

Erde make a set of loadbars which can be attached to the trailer or frame of a trailer (Halfords £120).

To fit a bike rack such as the Maxxraxx, which can be used while towing, you will need a fixed flange towbar to attach the mounting bracket. These work fine with a caravan, but as I mentioned, you will need to check there is sufficient clearance with your trailer.

Bike racks on detachable towbars use the towball as the mount so cannot be used while towing.

Go to your local blacksmith he will make up a set of bars for your trailer with brackets that you can bolt onto the sides of the trailer. Then just fit bog standaterd bike racks . All quite simple and straight forward.
