Hi, we are buying a new car to enable us to tow an Un-braked trailer. (Max load weight 750kg) I have read about the 85% Kerb weight rule, and am confused!   The maximum un-braked towing weight on the car we are looking at states 645kg.. The kerb weight is 1200kg. The car is a Citroen C4 1.6i VTI, VTR Plus. Does the 85% rule apply to un-braked trailers? Thankyou in advance. Tara R

It's not a rule it's a guidline. ie any trailer or caravan is best kept below 85% of car kerbweight for safe towing. As your loaded trailer will be well under that it need not concern you. The total weight of your loaded trailer should not exceed 645kg for your car which will be around 54% of kerbweight.

The 85% "rule" is NOT a rule but an advisory guide for new or inexperienced people towing. Its with reference to the weight of the trailer to the towing vehicle. In your case this would be 85% of 1200, so well over the 750.

However in your case you have to follow the cars plate and if this is 645 then its 645 max for you.

I suggest that you carefully check the weight that you will be putting in there, since the maximum un-braked weight your car can tow is 645kg.
Check the unloaded weight of the trailer and take that into account when loading.

The 85% rule is just a guideline and as its unbraked then no its does not apply at all.

Unbraked = max of 50% of the cars kerbweight upto 750kg for a 1500kg+ car.

But some cars have a lower unbraked towing limit.

The max plated weight of your trailer must not exceed 645kg.

Wrong gramps. Plated weight is irrelevant for C&U purposes. Only actual on road weight as axles weighed on weighbridge matters. Plated weight is only a consideration for licencing purposes.

Larger unbraked trailers all have max plated weights of 750kg. Any car can tow them provided axle weight of loaded trailer does not exceed car max unbraked tow weight.

Not according to the trailer hire shop, they wouldnt let me take a trailer away with a gross limit that exceeded my tow vehicle's limit.

I was collecting it with a Rover 800 also so not a small car, but we were towing with a Range Rover and a Jeep.

Not something i would want to be questioning at the side of the road after being stopped though.

I guess a trailer hire shop can make there own rules up Grampian.

There are plenty of cars with a max non braked tow weight capacity below 750kg that are towing non braked trailers that are rated to 750kg.

I am one of them, the 2017 mk7 VW Golf that I drive is rated to 640kg for non braked towing, although my non braked trailer is rated to 750kg but loaded to 540kg gross with all the kit.

Your hire shop were incorrect.
