I am starting to get a feel for what caravan I can tow as I'm looking to buy a second hand 4 birth next year.

I just want a sanity check as to what I can legally tow.

Here are the weights from my VIN plate:

These are my calculations:

Max Gross Vehicle Weight: 2300kg

Max Gross Train Weight: 3800kg

Max Tow Weight: 3800 - 2300 = 1500kg

85% Max Tow Weight: 1500 * 0.85 = 1275kg

B licence towing: 3500 - 2300 = 1200kg

So am I right in saying that currently, I can tow a caravan with an MTPLM of 1200kg as I passed my licence in 2006?

Thanks

You need to work out 85% of the kerb weight not 85% of the max tow, apart from that you seem to be correct.

ok i just checked the V5 and mass in service (which i believe is the kerb weight?) is 1641

So if this is the case does this mean that if I passed my B+E I could comfortably tow 1394kg?

Provided max tow weight of car is as train weight ie 1500kg then you can tow that weight with B+E licence. With B licence you need caravan with mtplm of less than 1200kg.

85% is not law. You are ok provided everything is within legal weight limit & your licence covers it. All the 85% thing is about is pointing out that it is a good idea to have caravan somewhat lighter than towcar which is sensible enough.

The specs for our 2015 1.5tdci Grand Cmax states that the max tow limit is 1200kgs. This reduces the choice of caravans available for us.

On many cars max tow weight can be taken from max train weight. Ie subtract car gross loaded weight from gross train weight = tow weight. Some though will quote a max tow weight less than that usually due to power limitation of engine. So op need to check the actual tow weight for his car. Should be in the handbook. From memory he should be ok with '14 2litre diesel.
